This was fun last time, leggo again

I'll start with: libertarians have solid takes ~40-50% of the time and many of them just need to be pushed a step further in their thinking to turn against capitalist oppression along with state oppression. The libright-to-leftist pipeline is stronger than most seem to think it is.

Believing the CIA is behind everything you don't like is no braver or smarter than the r/conspiracy people blaming the Jews for everything they don't like. Often it's also an excuse to not do anything, in fact.

Only unpopular here, completely cold take everywhere else: online "tankies" are seriously off-putting and almost as obnoxious as neo-libs. Yes 90% of what everyone knows about North Korea and China is racist propaganda, but forming your entire identity around defending Huawei from US economic imperialism is just cringe and profoundly confused imo. The worst part is how condescending they are to everyone else and how they act like their third eye is opened. As an anarchist I'm ultimately entirely okay with American world hegemony being broken up by the Chinese and hoping whatever takes its place is better. I know "tankies" can get behind that too but for some reason they're obsessed with calling us rad-libs and imperialists apologists

Maybe I am in an unusually sympathetic group of people. I feel like in my friend group talking shit like, "the USSR was pretty cool the stuff we all know about it is CIA lies" has had better results than, " well actually Stalin was bad but the ideas he had could be used for good."

I realize anecdote isn't evidence, I feel like we have seen the Right go pedal to the metal and shift the overton window successfully. I think it can work for us. For sure people will complain, however I don't think that proves it isn't working

Slightly unpopular opinions: -Breadtube is cool and good, just because you've moved past it doesn't mean people who need introduction to leftist spaces don't exist.

-Making fun of neolibs for "people were mean to me on twitter so i'm against healthcare" is just stupid. You have 2 choices: Either you gain people for the movement, or you have fun by scolding people on twitter. You can do both against different sets of people, but not the same people.

-Related to previous point, people will be turned off by leftists being assholes and "dirtbags". Being nice doesn't guarantee turning them over to our side, but being a dickhead guarantees they won't.

-Misogyny, racism etc. exist in left spaces. It might be to a lesser extent compared to libs or conservatives, but it still does.

-Posting screenshots of random people on twitter is stupid. Stop angerjerking, it's unhealthy and has no use. Use that energy to organize or reading.

Actually unpopular opinion: -It's valid to make fun of Stalin and/or Mao or any leftists leader for making stupid ass decisions.

A communist revolution is near impossible without significant sympathy and support among rank and file soldiers, in fact having that support is the difference between forming a Red Army that can resoundingly defeat reactionary forces, and getting murdered by Freikorps.

If you're an ML who flatly rejects the idea that all efforts should be extended to bring troops into any communist movement, while also believing that communism is solely achievable through revolution, you're not pragmatic at all, but rather more Utopian then even the most extreme "DemSocs" or "Anarkiddie" caricature.

Why do people who always assume the soldiers are necessary compare them to the Red Army, as if the US military and the Imperial Russian Army are remotely comparable? The Kerensky government literally could not ship soldiers to the front faster than they were deserting and the Petrograd garrisons rebelled specifically because they did not want to be sent out. Almost the entire Imperial military were conscripts who were in some of the worst conditions soldiers have ever seen. If we ever get to a situation where the average US soldier is an unwilling conscript looking at something akin to slowly dying of gangrene in a freezing cold trench to carry out an imperialist war on behalf of a self appointed government that doesn't even offer them anything for their service then yeah, reach out to the soldiers, engage in Trench Bolshevism. However, as long as the troops have air conditioning and 3 meals a day they will serve the bourgeoisie.

Everyone wants to pretend that revolution in the imperial core will be bloodless, or that we'll just be getting rid of the fascists, and it will be as quick as October. This is utopian. It's going to look a lot more like China after the fall of the Qing except probably even worse. Once the US military ceases to be the 'US' military because the US ceases to be 'United' then maybe the soldiers can be radicalized.

Privileged White activists don’t understand how to be allies to poc a lot of the time. Police reform protestors went to the most dangerous neighborhood in Chicago and protested outside of the police station there. They got flamed by locals for not letting the community know and for the possibility of inciting police violence who would have came down on the predominantly black residents. One dude called them out for not being there after “babies get shot”. As much as we hate the police and their role, some people who live in dangerous neighborhoods want more police and I think we should listen in that regard.

You can’t just storm into an area you haven’t worked with and expect to be welcomed. Organizing requires dirty work too like delivering groceries, outreach with youth, volunteer, etc.

New Atheism did more to stop religion than any communist ever did. I have heard so many horror stories from kids during that time and their insane religious parents and those forms and r/Atheism provided a fantastic spot for kids to rant. Still fuck the intellectuals behind it as the Islamophobia poisoned the movement.

Nah, because the reality is places like Canada and Russia will suddenly become enormous swathes of rather productive farmland. The Earth has been much hotter in the past, and the planet even having permanent ice caps is a relative rarity.

The problem is going to be the enormous change in what areas are habitable and productive and the creation of billions of climate refugees.

Those fossil fuels we're burning now all used to be gases in the atmosphere. In the Cretaceous, the temperature was 10 degrees Celsius hotter than today. There was probably some snow in the winter, but there was no permanent ice anywhere on the planet, including the poles and mountain peaks. Take a look at the wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cretaceous#Climate

Human-induced climate change is going to be absolutely disastrous for the people of the world today. We need to be taking dramatic, global action and completely restructuring society. But it certainly won't make the planet uninhabitable and I very, very seriously doubt it will cause human extinction.
