    Astroturfed by reactionary groomers?

I've always assumed some level of this. The alt right playbook targets teen sites like ifunny, reddit and Instagram

It's right there in the alt-right playbook indeed.

I saw that. The post was literally "Men aren't killing themselves because of toxic masculinity! It's because people punish them for opening up!" I feel like most people that criticize the idea of toxic masculinity don't even know what it means

Yeah that's very true, and I don't know if I like the term "toxic masculinity" as it's used outside of contexts where people actually know what the hell it means. It really does sound like it's victim-blaming in certain circumstances even though it isn't, and in other contexts it just sounds kind of essentializing, like maleness itself is toxic, even though you and I both know that's not what it means.

On one hand it's very useful but on the other hand it instantly turns a lot of people off.

people just need basic education, the term is perfectly fine. feminist theory just doesn't get taught in secondary school even though thats exactly when its most important imo

I mean education is nice and all, but it's better to use intuitive terms that anyone whose never heard the term can immediately understand than terms that mislead anyone who hasn't heard the definition.

please indicate another adjective we could use in conjunction with masculinity to dilinieate negative attitudes associated with masculinity that is immune from misunderstanding

i guarantee you whatever we change the name to the reactionaries will still rail against it and that'll be some people's only exposure to the term.

This is exactly it. We could all agree tomorrow to call it "self-destructive masculinity" tomorrow and The Discourse wouldn't get any better. Anti-feminist knee jerk reactions are to feminist concepts, not the specific choice of words

"self-destructive male expectations" could be used when not talking about outwardly-directed toxicity, and it would have either not confused the specific poster in that thread, or not given them the ammunition to intentionally confuse the readers of that thread.

I mean, I would much rather just widely teach feminist theory to kids but that's a lot less likely to happen soon

And like, I have heard the clarification of what toxic masculinity really means like, two times out of the thousands of times I have heard it used.

Yeah I agree 100%. I think maybe we should call it toxic misandry or something, but tbh its such a well-established phrase I don't see it being replaced anytime soon :/

Look at their post histories. It's like 95% stupid video games and memes. These were the kids in high school that weren't very likeable and weren't really worth talking to. Many of them improve a bit when they grow up and realize they need to develop some sort of "self". Plenty never do, of course.

It's the revolving door effect, people come in and the normal ones leave while the ones who never grow up stay. Just accumulating neets

The existence of such a subreddit makes me wince, I feel incredibly bad for anyone who posts there & the moderation team. How's those 500 "hey (:" PMs immediately after commenting?

White, male teenage gamers? On Reddit?

You must be mistaken, I don't think there's any chance a population like that would be reactionary.

Damn, that sucks to hear. I posted there a ton back when I was in high school around 2015. It was a pretty chill place. I remember it being politically left of center with the occasional immature reactionary behavior you'd expect from teenagers.

I've definitely gotten significantly more left since then, though. So maybe it's about the same and my memories are colored by what I believed at the time. But since it's reddit, it's definitely been astroturfed to all sorts of political ends, most of them affirming the status quo. Gotta get those ideas into their heads while they're young.

Because someone drew a girl version of the mascot and hentai was immediately made of her. Don't get me wrong, it was going down hill to begin with, but any chance of a good person being on that cesspool ended that day. That's why femageers was made. also, reddit+young man is just not a good combination.

yeah who would've thought the dumbest people, and the people trying to groom them, would be stupid?
