The collapse of the Soviet Union and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.
I don't think anything the US is selling to Ukraine is cutting edge. The Javelin is like 30 years old, the Stinger is forty or fifty. I'm sure they're updated models, but I doubt there's anything too surprising in there. The DPR and LPR probably appreciate the materiel though.
https://twitter.com/brechtcastel/status/1509547180402647051
Reposting this because I think it really illustrates how blatantly outright propagandistic and thought terminating the "debunking" thing is. 90% of this thread is about conclusively proving that not only are Ukranians lynching Roma, but they are lynching Roma in the westernmost part of Ukraine, and they are lynching them right now, and this in fact has been going on for 4 whole years before the invasion.
But, just by bolting on a bullshit entirely unsourced claim that "Russian propaganda" says these are ethnic Russians held as human shields(RT's article on the matter literally says the exact same conclusion as this whole thread), this is now turned from a thread documenting the fascist tendencies in Ukranian society into a thread about THE TRUTH and DEBUNKING RUSSIAN DISINFORMATION.
And if you'll look in the QRTs theres a flood of people who either have not even read the thread, or turn off their brains the second they see its about "debunking Russia" praising this thread for "conclusively debunking" a claim that the thread doesnt even prove exists in reality. All you have to do is say you have debunked a "russian claim" and libs will instantly accept it because it means they dont have to consider any problematic facts, or they will in fact chant about how its good that Roma are being lynched because actually, they could have just shot them in the streets for "looting"(Again, I have never seen this idea backed up with facts that its ok to shoot people in the streets on random suspicion of stealing food, and I suspect thats because its not real and is fucking criminal).
There is absolutely no critical thinking involved when libs read and share these debunking threads, no information has been absorbed outside of "use this as a weapon and browbeat people into submission with it".
🐦 fact checkers: Actually it's not Russians in eastern Ukraine being hate crimed, it's Roma in western Ukraine being hate crimed. Russia bad. :very-intelligent:
The average European: Hey, commiting hate crime is not cool!
The Ukrainian 'The Hunters': No, you don't understand. I'm only commiting hate crime against Roma!
The average European: Ohhhh, this is totally justified than. Please carry on.
A 27-part twitter thread clarifying that what russian propaganda is falsely claiming is fascism is actually fascism.
Russian propaganda(some guy on twitter I dont like) is falsely claiming that Ukranians are doing fascism because of invasion reasons, actually Ukranians are doing fascism for fascism reasons, take that putinbot!
Oof. Got permabanned from /r/worldnews.
Edit: Asked why, they told me "trolling other users", which I wasn't doing, then they immediately muted me so I couldn't respond.
you said something that goes against the western propaganda, they don't allow that
This whole Ukraine thing is the clearest example that shows that liberals don't believe in free speech and never did.
Not that I think anybody actually believes in free speech when push comes to shove, but it's really embarrassing how liberals pretend to.
As far as they're concerned, as long as no constitutionally chartered institution is involved, no free speech violation has occurred. Free Speech to Liberals means that Steve Huffman, Jack Dorsey, and Mark Zuckerberg get to choose exactly what kind of slop gets transmitted on their property.
Posting on reddit is still praxis, especially on "big" subs where you are immediately exposed to smears, bans and all that. There are always silent readers that will see your messages, so it's good thing to do as long as you can cope with the stress.
I think offering some resistance on one of the largest social media platforms isn't useless.
I want to agree, especially without a large enough community like chapo where there is enough positive re-enforcement, updoots, and bullying to actually create a shift in thought patterns. I was very much helped out of reactionary and anti-communist brain by that sub, enough to get me to a place where I now engage with theory and have started using dialectics to put a critical lens on, well, everything.
I think a lot of us here were moved further left by using reddit, but I also know a lot of people probably stayed on reddit and via the psychology of groupthink, no longer view communism in a favorable light, likely believe all the lies about China and the USSR etc, because that is what is popular. I know a lot has changed in the last 3 years, and reddit has always had a lot more potential toward reactionary beliefs. How do people find this site or lemmy though if everyone ceases to engage?
The mid 2010's it was basically an incel alt-right recruitment site. I can only speak to my own experience, but I don't think it's uncommon. I consumed a lot of reactionary content in that time-period, because it was thrown in my face, and I had no critical lens to apply, I was basically just like oh new ideas I haven't heard I will look at them. I hadn't begun to confront my shit brain, and I was heavily propagandized for my entire life to be anti-communist. It was only through remaining open minded to seeking all information I could that I began to engage with leftist subs, and because of the more patient users, they helped me start to deprogram and see communism as an acceptable ideology. I basically found those ideas by seeing something well written in a main sub, going to a profile, and following users to the "good" subs.
chapo sub was also full of wreckers and people who were just assholes and offered no constructive criticism "it's not my job to educate you" types, so I don't have completely rose colored glasses
I think no-one at all should use reddit, or any social media especially how it is now. I think people should engage in real life, share reading materials, organize the workplace etc. At this time, sharing communist literature irl mostly alienates someone further. We live in increasingly online and socially isolated times, and increasingly hostile toward AES countries and historic socialist projects. Tiktok is also full of AI generated and reactionary content, so is game streaming, but you could argue those platforms have increased leftist thought. Those platforms require a good personality, charisma, good lighting etc, and it's not as easy to form a critical mass as reddit has been in the past.
If you have ideas about how potential leftists can be reached, online, I'm open to discussion.
I am IP banned from reddit now which is good for me because it was stressful for me and started to feel like a huge waste of time
Will the silent readers take you seriously with negative one thousand downvotes? Or does it serve to delegitimize your point in their eyes? That's the question.
Obviously the effect on majority - I bet overwhelming majority - will be to see you as an extreme idiot rightfully silenced and banned. But you will make a couple guys think...
Absolutely - as long as you have nerves to go through the stress of "feedback". That's the way to reach new people, as opposed to (quite comfy and enjoyable tho) shitposting in our local circlejerks :barx:
What is the ratio? One person posts, ten people reply, a hundred people read and lurk?
Should be something like that, the number of "silent" readers is usually orders of magnitude above the number of votes/replies.
I will be away for the next week (not due to fatigue on these posts or anything, if anything it's the opposite). The schedule for this will get wacky. Worst case scenario, I won't have the wifi nor the time to do any posts and you'll see me when I'm back. Best case, the updates will continue mostly as planned but almost certainly at different times than normal (probably later in the day). Probably something in between the best and worst case. I'm not going to pretend like these are particularly important or anything, but I know that at least some people like them and find them useful, so I thought I'd just let people know. Regardless, I will probably be in the megathread from time to time even if I can't comment.
Of course, maybe (hopefully) Ukraine will surrender while I'm gone, and the war will be over when I get back. In which case, I shall think of something else to do - perhaps a more global version?
Previous update today here.
Economically:
- From @granit :Sergey Glazyev suggests that Western enterprises that closed down in Russia should be handed over to their employees.
- RTG: Peskov said making gas (and other commodities) be paid for in rubles is not to "click on the nose" of the west, but so that euros and dollars are not taken away from Russia due to sanctions, and because there is an erosion in the trust in the dollar and euro, and many countries doubt their reliability and develop calculations in national currencies.
- MSM: India's power sector, and thus India's populace, will face one of the worst summers ever due to a "perfect inflationary storm".
- MSM: From @granit: Europe’s ambitious timetable to cut Russian energy imports will require a lot of steel, copper and aluminum to build more wind, solar and LNG terminals. The problem: Russia is a major supplier of those metals, and the war is making them expensive
- RTG: Slovakia, which gets about 80% of its natural gas from Russia, says that gas supplies from Russia cannot be stopped and so they will pay in rubles.
- Transport Minister Martin Kupka of the Czech Republic says that the country has natural gas reserves for about a month and is working on getting natural gas from Qatar, after having cut off Russian natural gas.
- German Retail Association says that German food retailers will raise prices by minimum 20% to maximum of 50% on Monday.
- EU should discuss ban on Russian gas imports - German defense minister
Diplomatically and Politically:
- RTG: There is talk from "Ukrainian sources" that Zelensky will give no territorial concessions, making the peace deals pointless.
- RCM: Zelensky said that Ukraine has not received security guarantees from any country.
- RTG: Georgia's prime minister states that sanctioning Russia will only hurt Georgia, but still participates in all international sanctions. However, Georgia will continue to export mineral and fresh water, ferroalloys, wine and agricultural products. Russia is one of Georgia's largest trading partners.
- RTG: The Pakistani Army says "We have nothing to do with what is happening in the political arena." - so a coup in Pakistan has probably been averted.
- Pakistani FM Qureshi received a message from the Chinese foreign minister that "China has always protected Pakistan’s sovereignty & territorial integrity and will continue to do so,”
- RTG: The Czech Interior Ministry states that $450 million has been spent on the refugee crisis caused by the Ukraine invasion, and that 300,000 refugees have already been taken in. They expect another 300,000 to arrive before the crisis is over.
- African immigrants in Belgium are reportedly rightfully outraged that Ukrainian refugees have more rights than they do.
- RTG: People in Latvia who support Russia in their invasion may have their passports taken from them.
- RTG: The mayor of Dnipro called for killing Russians all over the world. Boris Filatov posted about this on Facebook (banned in Russia). The moderators of the social network did not block it.
- RTG: Pro-Russian rally in Germany today, with over 5000 cars in support of Russia, flying their flag and the USSR flag.
- RTG: China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Lavrov: “China and Russia must deepen bilateral ties in every area ... China-Russia partnership ‘stronger than ever’"
Militarily:
- RTG: Ukrainian forces control all territory up to the Belarus border in the north after the successful withdrawal of Russian forces over the last couple days.
- RTG: Russian armed forces destroyed large fuel storage facilities in Konstantinovka, Slavuta and Ternopil, which supplied Ukrainian troops from the Mykolaiv and Donetsk directions.
- RTG: Mykolaiv hit with Russian missile strikes, according to mayor.
- An article on Russia's military and how the west underestimated it
- DPA giving his analysis on the military situation.
Dipshittery:
- RTG: Poland's Deputy Prime Minister says that the US should deploy 150,000 troops to European countries to increase their presence and provide Europe with security. He also says deploying tactical nuclear weapons against Russia would "significantly strengthen Moscow's deterrence" and that while the question does not arise at the moment, it may change soon.
- MSM: Ukraine says Russia has abducted 11 mayors from occupied territory, including in Kiev, Kherson, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv and Donetsk.
Ursula von der Leyen says China must:
• Stop its unjustified trade measures against Lithuania
• Lift sanctions against MEPs
• Address global concerns on human and labour rights, especially in Xinjiang
• Improve access and conditions for EU companies in its market.
Okay... and? If China does not do this, what will the EU do? Go into recession even harder? You ain't shit without China or Russia. Go be a vassal continent to America and explode your economies with more expensive American products or shut the fuck up.
EU preaching about sanctions, unjustified trade measures, human(!)and labour(!!) rights is to funny to even make me angry :barx:
EU = a bunch of Yankish bootlickers masquerading as a geopolitical bloc
Thousands of Pakistanis take to the streets to protest the US due to the recent news that the US may be interfering in its domestic politics.
Good points, comrade. I've been trying to purge my brain of all the western bullshit that's in there and this really helps.
I've been increasingly realizing over the last couple days that the Russian focus isn't really on Ukraine, the fronts, the military maneuvers, etc in and of itself anymore - and maybe never really was. Like, sure, it's a major part of their ongoing strategy obviously, so much so that they were willing to take the massive amount of sanctions for it even if they were autarkic enough that it wouldn't collapse their country, and I don't wanna be seen as coping in the face of a few Russian L's here and there in this lull before Phase 2 begins by saying "oh a-actually it doesn't matter", but it really is "just" a subsection of the wider goal of breaking US hegemony - even if that's only explicitly for the goal of boosting Russia (as opposed to some socialist or communist plan of doing it for the sake of the world proletariat or whatever).
That's why I (and many other socialists) are increasingly shying away from the military moves in Ukraine as the interesting part, and focussing more on the massive global economic and diplomatic consequences. And because those consequences are so dire for the future of US hegemony, that's why you're still seeing places like Reddit or just the media in general so focussed on the military part still - as well as for the reason that violence and war gets you more clicks - because there's not really any way to bend them other than to say "b-but Russia will be hurt more than we will be! and China, they'll, uhh, China will, uh, uhh ... Uighurs!"
Take it from me, who's been sifting through media and news for the last week or so - the Russian and Chinese media is more focussed on the economic side of things, whereas western media is more focussed on how the invasion itself is doing, as well as the standard culture war shit and recent big news like the Oscars and all that.
This war is fucking stupid, and anyone who supports the war is a fucking idiot
I'm now 100% convinced that French soldiers were at Mariupol, given that Macron has now stopped calling Putin since the helicopter was shot down.
I am taking the constructive criticism to source as much as possible. Unfortunately, a lot of what I get comes from Russian telegram and such (so if you tried to show it your lib friends and relatives then it wouldn't go too well) but I thought I'd hold myself Accountable™. This will make these take longer, though.
RTG: Russian telegram.
RCM: Russian/Chinese media.
MSM: Mainstream media (obviously). Well, it doesn't have to be literally mainstream, just "any media that isn't Russian or Chinese".

- MSM: Russia's profits from energy exports may grow up a third this year, earning a projected total of $321 billion.

MSM: Apparently (I can’t read German), Deutsche Wirtschafts Nachrichten is reporting that the salaries of German authorities is going up by about 300 euros per month. This is while the German people are told that very difficult times are ahead.
I can read German, I found the article and yeah, pretty much exactly what you said. Our chief neoliberal Christian Lindner (whose salary is going up by 275€ as well) literally recently said "We're all going to get poorer."
Danish European Commissioner Margret Vestager teaches Europeans to wash less to annoy Putin. "Every time you turn off the water, you can say, “Get it, Putin!”
Politicians already wash hands of future recessions and shortages. Hey, nobody said it'll be fun! :gui-better:
Back when she was active in Danish politics, and arguably had more power than the succdem prime minister, Vestager was known as a neoliberal ghoul who among other things insisted on slashing unemployment benefits during a recession. That was more important for her to ram through than any of the liberal antiracist virtue signalling her party is known for. She's complete trash.
It's true, but apparently it was removed very quickly
Fucking Amazonisation
Kinda impressive that Andrew of Channel 5 is going to Ukraine to try and get on top of things but I can't shake the feeling like it's not a great move, I like him covering things domestically if that makes sense, I dunno if trying to candid camera interview people fleeing a warzone is gonna be very tasteful no matter how much it might boost his cred
patrick lancaster is the steve kornacki of on-the-ground military journalism
From what I remember he handled the George Floyd riots pretty well. Mostly stayed quiet and let people talk
I don't know how that's going to work unless he knows Russian
The entire reason I know he's in Poland right now is the Instagram post that was putting out a public call for a Ukrainian translator willing to help him lol like, respect for going but maybe have a guide/interpreter in place before you go to a warzone
German libs really out here demanding more expensive gas and even worse conditions for poor people :stress:
The only thing that gets through to these authoritarian Western regimes is force.
Oh i agree its suicidal not to, but just saying germany hasnt agreed yet. Given how stupid the EU can be at times, i wouldnt rule anything out.
Smart move by russia though, yes
I suspect Germany will use a dodge via a third party to make it seem like theyre buying in dollars instead of rubles.
