it's actually a practice they stole from western conservatives in the first place. i've seen losers on /pol/ do that for years. It's the entire ideology behind their "white genocide/great replacement" conspiracy laid out in Turner Diaries, Camp of the Saints, and ideological predecessors like Mein Kampf and The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. The narrative goes that hordes of swarthy orcs are immigrating to the first world to suck at the teat of welfare. The truth is they're getting a lot of refugees because they keep bombing people. They can't resolve the contradiction so they embrace racism instead.

It's even more contradictory because they need these immigrants as the workforce ages and capital needs heads to put boots over instead of working towards post-scarcity. Merkel has been much lauded for "expertly assimilating" over a million refugees in Germany, as if out of some humanitarian concern instead of the cynical ploy that it is. Better that then turning them away, but why not just stop exploiting and wreaking havoc on those nations to begin with?

Are you going with the 'reverse racism' shit, suggesting libs are overly sensitive when conservatives refer to minorities as orcs as opposed to this or is it something else?

I think they're just suggesting that liberals will be (justifiably) angry when conservatives use the 'orc' terminology for minorities, while having no such qualms about anyone using it for Russians

it's just a really unpleasant argument when you're deriding western liberals for being sensitive about calling people who've been at the end of untold violence in their western countries orcs, smacks of the reverse racism bits conservatives love to pull.

Are those posters mostly Ukrainian nationalists? I was under the impression most of them are just Americans/ Brits commenting on the Ukraine subbredit. Why would a sub full of Ukrainian nationalists all be speaking English to each other? I'm sure some of them are there, but for the most part I believe it's an astroturfed exercise in building a Western consensus, like most of reddit.

Everyone speaks English, Reddit is primarily part of the English speaking internet, and Ukrainians are trying to drum up as much support for their cause as possible.

I'm sure they have Ukrainian forums where they speak Ukrainian.

I know more people learn English than vice-versa because imperialism, but I seriously doubt the plurality of people on the Ukrainian subreddit right now are actually native Ukrainian. Especially after the conflict flared up and there was an international outcry. But even looking through Web Archive back before Euromaidan happened in 2014, the subreddit was full of threads like "can anyone translate this ukrainian for me?" and "me and my girlfriend are visiting odessa." i.e. not natives.

It was ethnically cleansed after WWII, that's why there's no Germans there. The Russians still occupy the place because it was the capital city of Prussia. A nation that kept invading Russia over and over again. Well the final time they tried, Russia came back, ripped the beating heart out of the place and annexed it to make sure that would never, ever happen again. It's worked so far but we're not out yet.

unfortunately, I disagree. Actually I take that back. I don't disagree but I do think it's more complicated than that. Perhaps Tolkein would object to his orcs being used in this way but it's worth remembering that In a private letter, Tolkien describes orcs as:

"squat, broad, flat-nosed, sallow-skinned, with wide mouths and slant eyes: in fact degraded and repulsive versions of the (to Europeans) least lovely Mongol-types."

The Tolkien scholar Dimitra Fimi describes his mentions of "swarthy complexions" and slanted eyes as "straight out of Victorian anthropology, which links mental qualities and physique"

It's also worth noting the "moral geography" of Middle Earth.. Note the depiction of Eastern and Southern cultures as inherently allied with Morgoth/Sauron/Darkness.

Even if Tolkein's racism wasn't deliberate or conscious or ill-intentioned, it was still present.

There's a lot of cope/PR management from his estate about Orcs, The Haradrim, The "Black Men Like Half-Trolls" etc.

      From Return of the King:

Not too soon came their aid to the Rohirrim; for fortune had turned against Éomer, and his fury had betrayed him. The great wrath of his onset had utterly overthrown the front of his enemies, and great wedges of his Riders had passed clear through the ranks of the Southrons, discomfiting their horsemen and riding their footmen to ruin. But wherever the mûmakil came there the horses would not go, but blenched and swerved away; and the great monsters were unfought, and stood like towers of defence, and the Haradrim rallied about them. And if the Rohirrim at their onset were thrice outnumbered by the Haradrim alone, soon their case became worse; for new strength came now streaming to the field out of Osgiliath. There they had been mustered for the sack of the City and the rape of Gondor, waiting on the call of their Captain. He now was destroyed; but Gothmog the lieutenant of Morgul had flung them into the fray; Easterlings with axes, and Variags of Khand. Southrons in scarlet, and out of Far Harad black men like half-trolls with white eyes and red tongues. Some now hastened up behind the Rohirrim, others held westward to hold off the forces of Gondor and prevent their joining with Rohan.

      Tom Shippey:

Additionally, Tolkien scholar Tom Shippey stated in reference to the 'black men like half-trolls' passage from The Return of the King that Tolkien was attempting to write like a medieval chronicler in describing the Rohirrim's encounter with a Haradrim: " and when medieval Europeans first encountered sub-Saharan Africans, they were genuinely confused about them, and rather frightened." He noted that Tolkien had pointed out in his early scholarly works "the ancient English seemed to have a belief in fire-demons, who naturally enough had skin like soot – their word for them, ‘harwan’, is related to Latin ‘carbo’, ‘soot,’ or carbon." Shippey concluded by remarking that, "An Anglo-Saxon meeting an African for the first time might then really wonder - for a moment, from a distance - whether this was a demon from his own mythology. This doesn't mean that Tolkien shared the mythology, or the mistake."

I think more influential to Tolkein's perspective than simple medieval chronicling, was the much more recent violent encounters British colonial troops had with the indigenous people of India and Africa.

Good post. I meant like, more to justify war. I think he would really hate to see it applied to real people to dehumanizing them to justify violence against them. Hell, he had that issue with the actual orcs in his own works that he never lived to figure out a better way to depict them.

It's not really surprising. It's a national sub, and all the national subs are full of the worst kind of chuds. And they've been invaded, which is going to make people slightly upset. And the loudest voices are going to be the angriest, dumbest, meanest nationalists, because it's a national sub and because Ukraine (not exceptional among nations) is full of hardcore right wing nationalists.
