It gets blurry sometimes, especially from reductionistic pop nihilist types that say stuff like the machines are at least as worthy as the mere human "meat puppets" being replaced or even destroyed by them.

Disclaimer: I'm not saying machines doing work is bad. I'm saying that people that use sophistry to explain why people shouldn't even push back when capitalism fucks people over with machines that could have instead made their lives better are bad.

So, I'm not smart enough to really understand what 'non-fungible' means, so I took "people are non-funglible" to basically more or less mean "people are good and I love them." That, to me, seems a basic tenant of leftism.

What it means is that people shouldn't be seen as interchangeable, redundant, or disposable just because there are other people that can ostensibly take their place, or something "superior" to them for that matter.

The dumb parody episodes where the entire point was just “hey look at how dumb and overdone these tropes are in this genre of tv, and how above it we are” were the real low part of the show for me, especially since they keep happening. Maybe the reason Rick Sanchez is such a farcically plot armored ego insert power fantasy character for Justin Roiland is he needed to make the smartest and bestest exceptional version of how he sees himself, superior and above the NPCs or whatever, so very unique.

Yes yes "Council of Ricks" and all that, but that's just the old techbro belief that only the very special ought to rule everyone else.

I mean the old Peter O Toole/Orson Welles bit about Shakespeare playing the ghost rings true. The great artists know not to take the lead role but instead some role that sells the illusion/sets the stage for the lead.

Immature artists like Roliand and Lin Manuel cast themselves as leads since they can't imagine receding into the background (as great authors and artists do).

I wholeheartedly agree. It's in very bad taste and a sign of arrogance and hubris to not only have a blatant ego insert but to make that ego insert that plot armored and awesome and amazing while being the main character.

I mean negative capability exists (i.e. we can always read "against" Rick or these other self inserts since there are other characters).

But the degree of self inserts just makes that so hard. Susan Sarandon as the therapist is right, but the show keeps screaming Pickle Rick....

The show never really read against him in the first place. Despite all the opposition Rick gets, his philosophy and viewpoint always turn out to be right in the end.

The closest they get is showing Rick as sad but even then it plays into the self-felating "tragic smart guy" who isn't understood by the sheeple around him.

and a larger focus on how it doesnt matter what he feels, because the multiverse

This was a non-starter for me. What kind of :brainworms: are behind the notion?

If there were multiple universes in infinite combinations and presumably alternate versions of someone because infinity is weird that way, it simply does not follow to me that an individual in any specific universe suddenly "doesn't matter" and that their existence is somehow invalid and/or disposable.

Sure, if a pop nihilistic edgelord like Rich Sanchez or Justin Roiland had the means to harm that specific universe to power his car or get access to treats or something that would of course be bad, but the narrative stating "these lives don't matter because multiverse" is just :brainworms: to me, even if multiverses existed and worked somewhat like that.

It wasn't a non-starter for me, because there's an interesting critique you can make about this perspective.

I should clarify that the idea could be interesting but the whole thing was subjectively a non-starter for me because of the pop nihilistic spectacles and ranting from Roiland himself throughout the presentation. The show itself was a non-starter each and every time well meaning friends insisted that this clip or that clip would pull me in in a way that the first episode and/or "haha what if Doc Brown but :libertarian-alert: " pilot didn't.

what did me in was that episode which tries to parody heist movies (but in particular ocean's eleven which hasn't been culturally releveant in nearly a decade) where everyone kept repeating "you son of a bitch i'm in" . i couldn't tell if it was making fun of the audience for liking this sort of lowbrow comedic repetition stuff or if it was playing it straight and the audience can't tell that this is on the same level as big bang theory sheldon banging on penny's door with his robotic "penny penny penny" calls every episode.

To be fair to squidbillies it was canceled around the same time as all the other og shows like venture bros, metalocalypse, aquateen, ect. Adult Swim's bread and butter was always the canceled fox shows and that funded the more avant-garde programming. Once family guy and king of the hill left they were forced to make their own original programming and that's how rick and morty came to be, but adult swim probably saw the writing on the wall with Justin roiland being unreliable and thats why they made smiling friends as a possible replacement for Rick and morty. And oh is smiling friends not capable of filling the shoes of adult swims most successful tv show like ever and has its own problems of its producers being sex pests. The whole oneyplays crew that is behind smiling friends associated with a pretty notorious pedophile that drew pornography of his own mother. I would not be surprised if adult swim has to cancel that show next.

Adult swim is a tragedy, its the defacto leader of western animation, it is the only television channel young people even remotely like, it has somehow managed to stay relevant in an age where tv is dead and the internet is king and is basically the only real art house/hipster tv corporation in existence (in the US at least). Yeah I know it's a subsidiary of time Warner or whatever the fuck but adult swim is a cultural institution on the way to becoming was a cultural institution. Like we all have fond memories getting high on your friends couch watching some schitzo cartoon on adult swim at 3 am, it helped introduce anime to american audiences that wasn't pokemon. Adult swim is something that can't happen again when the entire entertainment industry is owned by only 6 companies that can only produce nothing but sequels and reboots.

And you know, despite my fondness for this tv channel, I'm glad its dying. It was ran by the people who were friends with epstein, it helped perpetuate the treat society we live in, it helped sell funko pops and pushed a lot of reactionary trash like squidbillies and million dollar extreme. Adult swim is like a weimar berlin arthouse where everyone is on heroin and the ss are right about to bust in with a flamethrower. Its the swansong of a dying liberal empire, its beautiful but its death would be so satisfying after all the harm it has caused to marginalized communities and the normalization it did for the liberal status quo. The world needs less hipsters and brooklyn brownstones and avant-garde television. We need some (a lot) of discomfort for the western nations and taking their treats away and beating the shit out them is the only acceptable medicine for the treat obsessed westerner. Pain is medicine.
