There's almost 0 state efforts to preserve the cultural identities of immigrants of any kind

When people celebrate "diversity" in the West, it's just eating shawarma, drinking boba, watching Anime, listening to kpop, and eating at an Ethiopian restaurant. Pure commodification and consumerism masquerading as celebration and promotion of foreign cultures

Or you'll have people fetishizing about spicy latinas, lightskins, and Asians like they're fucking Pokemon cards

Boba liberals are 100% real. It's mostly East Asian liberals whose (faux) progressivism is more motivated by self-hatred of being Asian than any real substantial belief in progressivism. They are only (faux) progressivism because they associate progressivism with Westernization/whiteness. So, you get a lot of boba liberal women who refuse to date Asian men because of "patriarchal Confucian values" but exclusively date white men. I guess the Black community is also hit by those same patriarchal Confucian values originating from noted African philosopher Confucius. Any connection to their Asian roots is through the shallowest way possible, basically food since Anglo food is so inferior to Asian food (and ever single other cuisine) that even the most self-hating Asian doesn't have it in them to say Anglo food is better. But the food is complete entry level food that even white people like. You don't see boba liberals repping food like cow tongue and chicken feet. It's always entry level shit like egg rolls and fried rice.

In regards to your point, yes I do think there are some Asian diaspora who self-flagellant about being anti-Black. Does the Asian community have a pervasive problem with anti-Blackness? Of course, you just need to see the number of Asians who continue to die on the affirmative-action-is-bad-acktually hill or circlejerk over rooftop Koreans. Colorism is a pervasive thing and while its origins isn't necessarily anti-Black, it's for fucking sure anti-Black in 2023. The problem is when these boba liberals spend the vast majority of their time and energy self-flagellating their community for being anti-Black while having none of that vitriol for the mayos or understanding where the anti-Blackness came from. When someone says with the straight face that Asians are more racist towards Black people than white people, what more does there need to be said?

Over here in England we had many local dialects that had words specific to the regions. All of which have slowly disappeared into history. Someone did record some of the old folk on wax cylinders at the turn of the 20th century, and I think some recordings are on youtube. It just shows how fluid society is, really

its not really society being fluid, a lot of those regional dialects were actively suppressed, especially the ones associated with poverty/immigrants/rural areas. my dad and grandma talk about getting beaten by teachers for their broad [redacted] dialect and accent (which doubtless i have much less of than they did, but even i was criticized and marked down for it) and for decades you couldn't be on british radio or tv speaking anything other than RP, which spread a very specific idea of "correct" english across the country.

This is what craKKKers don't understand when they ask "why can't we have White pride"? White isn't a culture. English, German, French, Italian, are cultures. "White" is what's left when you strip European migrants of all but the most surface level manifestations of their culture.

Yeah I agree that there is such a thing as White American culture or white Australian culture or whatever. It's just that they always try to sell it as some sort of overarching global "white" culture that is all the best parts of Rome and Greece and France and so on, when in fact anyone from those cultures would scoff at being lumped in together.

Similarly to how the patriarchy and masculinity harms men (who still benefit from them) by not allowing them to express themselves fully, white supremacy erases all cultural difference or diversity in favor of a single, unified, "culture", even to groups who enjoy its privileges. The fact that regional cultures are erased or commoditized by a uniformizing influence of consumer "culture", and of the domination of a single, unified "white experience", is to be lamented as well, just not as much as the more egregious physical and cultural harm done to PoC.

Neil Gaiman's "American Gods" is a fun exploration of this. All gods who were powerful and revered in the places where they came from, are shells of their former selves, brought over by the people who have migrated here or been forced to come to the US otherwise, but unable to flourish because in the US there is no room for sincere belief and worship, which is what fuels their power. Instead, Media, Technology, and Globalization have become powerful gods on their own, because people will worship at their altar while thinking they worship other gods, or no gods at all.

when i was a kid, the view i got about the US from media about immigrant experience was that assimilation was the most important thing, learning english, changing you name to an american one, acting like an american, etc. i imagine most immigrants going to the US also have similar views and for example dont teach their kids their native language thinking it may make it harder for them to assimilate, and US society also dont make that easy since many places like public and private ones only speak in english or even are hostile to people speaking in any other language than english.

those factors plus not living in an area with people from your birth country background eventually leds to many 3rd gen migrants that dont know their granparents original language

I think the difference is that in a Dane in the United Kingdom will often be considered "British" very fast. If they can speak fluent English, then that family has "successfully" (for better or worse) assimilated. Not possible for Asian Americans. Many Americans will never accept them as "American." There are some Chinese families that have been here since the mid-19th century, and I'm 100% positive they've been yelled at by random folks to "go back to China" in the past three years. They're never allowed to assimilate, but now they've been disconnected from their roots as well. Hell of an awful place to be.

Yes but this is why "assimilation" is not a good thing in this instance. It's certainly not "genocide" but it's 100% not a good thing. Assimilation to burgerland is tantamount to cultural death, and often real death when your home is not your home and there's nowhere to escape to because you've been severed from any place that might take you in.

What about an emigrant who assimilates and does not teach their kids their "native" language due to the massive cultural pressure of living in the imperial core? Now those kids are stranded, unable to feel at home in the metropole, unable to return to the land of their parents, imprisoned in a place that will never accept them and cut off from anybody who would. Emigrants can return. Can second generation? Third generation, like the woman in the screengrab above? Not easily, not likely.

The problem is that white colonizers have built a system that rewards us "savages" for becoming "civilized". Most of the true people of Cemanahuac and Turtle Island do not speak our own languages or practice much of our own culture, and those of us who do, we have to fight very hard to raise our communities children with our mindset for the world and not the colonizer's. This is true for anyone who comes from elsewhere as well.

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) introduced the No Federal Funding for CCP Spying and Persuasion In Education Settings (SPIES) Act. The bill closes the CIWP loophole and prohibits any DoD funding for colleges that host Confucius Institutes

“U.S. taxpayer dollars should not be benefiting the CCP and its murderous regime. Confucius Institutes, which are directed by Beijing, have plagued college campuses in our nation with the CCP’s propaganda.” - Senator Rubio

Congressman Jim Banks (R-IN) introduced companion legislation in the House of Representatives.

"There is no situation where we should make it easier for the Chinese Communist Party to spy on our universities. Safeguarding American research [...] is common sense and vital to our national security.” - Congressman Banks

While genocide as term once was used mostly for stuff that involved killings it did a shift, first in academics and soon in wider society. Genocide now has multiple aspects and can mean only a cultural, or intellectual one. Ensuring structures and pressures which result in languages and as such a main piece of culture lost (which Jewish groups in Europe did circumvent by having everyday language and also written/religious languages Hebrew and Aramaic which were used to teach) might as well be structural cultural genocide.

I think in this case there is another intersecting aspect that could proof to be interesting. That is that for a long time it was believed that bi- or multi linguality would lead to bad language comprehension segregation and bad academic success (of course this had classism and a good deal of racisms baked in). This is wrong however, but I still know plenty of parents who were vary teaching their kids their own first language as to not hinder their academic and thus societal success. Which of course is classist, but is also trying to game the system, as economic security is often valued more by parents for their children than cultural continuity, as long as the kids are happy and safe.

there's no target group though. literally native english speakers from other countries have their accents jacked up if they live here long enough. hell, even white people who go to college have some linguistic homogenization and yeah there's some classism and racism that's part of that but nobody would ever call that a genocide against australians or west virginians.

        • JuneFall [none/use name]

In Australia some non English languages were punished, so I don't think that is such a good example. In the US you had sinophobe actions and the japanese internment camps, you had cultural genocide against kids speaking some languages, in Canada this went on bis at least the 90s. On some school yards there is a English only policy (some for Germany, were in some cases it exists formal or informal).

While I do see that you would like to make a point about the level of how significant it is and also how there are processes which happen that you would like to not have labeled as such a negative thing, or are processes you label as just existing, I would like to highlight that it is a much bigger and structural relevant problem, with continuity to before.

Even in terms of dialect homogenizations linguists do make points about whether to save or record them, nationalists and alike are arguing for keeping their (but not others) dialects up.

In terms of cultural and classist genocide against non Birtish accents I would like to mention the corporal punishment dished out against both orphans but also non Oxford English speakers on boarding schools in the UK in the 50s and partially 60s, but also that similar things happened in France, which had colonial characters, too. In terms of elite prep schools the forced homogenization in terms of speech and language was a colonial and imperial tool that furthered genocides, cultural and physical ones.

i didn't say anything about the british?

ffs the fact that indigenous people were genocided into speaking english in the first place has nothing to do with their english accent changing over a period of years because the moved to a different settler colonial nation-state.

someone born and raised in mexico city who moves to uru uru and lives in bolivia for 30 years will start to sound bolivian at some point unless they deliberately avoid interacting with their neighbors. their kids will go to bolivian school and learn bolivian spanish instead of mexican spanish. the difference between this person i made up and my old indian classmate's kids who probably won't learn hindi is that those kids also won't learn any lakota or whatever either.

i'm not going to fucking say hworsch instead of wash just because my grandmother did, but i spent a week doing work training as the only non-southerner in a group of 10 and I was unconsciously adopting some of their inflection after a few days of not hearing my own dialect.

genocide requires intent and a specific target. we're on fucking hexbear i'm not denying that genocide happens or that deliberate systematic oppression of languages is part of some genocides but assimilationism isn't that on its own, even as racist as it is here, it's not fucking geocide when the children of immigrants aren't perfect copies of their parents.

is that cultural genocide though. If an immigrant comes to a place where the language isn't widely adopted it's likely that their decsendents will not learn their language because by growing up in an entirely different society they stop being of their parents culture.

That would only be cultural genocide if the entire cultural group emmigrated and came to separate areas and even then would need to be artificially forced in order to be genocide
