Political assassinations coming back are not in the political establishment's interest (both R and D) , so they have to try tone it back a notch, while still keeping up the front that Trump "is the biggest threat to democracy". It leads to contradictions like this, where Harris puts out these statements to try appeal to moderates to try cool down the rhetoric, while still keeping up the front that Trump is an existential threat.
