we also really want to create a worker-owned tech cooperative so some members of the team can do this full time
this sounds super cool I hope it works out for you all
I can't trust a mod team that doesn't upgrade to crack, smh my head
If you want me to use hella crack you'll have to upgrade your patreon sub. Crack aint cheap.
A mod told me that a transparency report was in the works. So far I don't see any reason to doubt they'll publish specifics. <3
Priority #1 is nuking all these spammers
on the bright side, the librapay and patreon all show what's getting contributed so there is some mediocre level of transparency already
But I mean where is the money going? I feel like we should know that before we donate. Not some unspecified time after, maybe.
My understanding is, right now, it’s going into Beatnik’s name.
He’s going to be using it to set up a worker co-op structure. That’ll involve, at the minimum, paying server costs, but ideally it’ll also be enough to pay wages, advertise Chapo, donate to specific funds, expanding the focus of the co-operative, etc.
Tbh, I’ve given away money for worse.
So as it stands right now it's just going to one person who's intentions we don't can't really know for sure with no way to verify what it will actually be put to?
I mean, he could have set this whole thing up as a grift to run off with a few hundred dollars, but it’s a pretty long game for not much reward.
It’s a fair bit of work to mod the CTH sub, and to then manage the launch this whole Lemmy project.
It’s not like the grift would last forever, either. We’re what, less than two weeks into the launch and we’re already seeing questions like this from the wider community? No way it’d get more than a grand or so before we saw an internal dev team split.
What we know of Beatnik is that he’s a PM in a tech company. That makes me think that a grand or so isn’t really all that important to him, at least not for the amount of effort it’d take here.
Personally, I’m happy to keep donating. I’ll take my cue from the dev team. If they’re comfortable trusting beatnik to follow through, I am too.
Pretty convinced at this point that this is a wrecker, not "from the wider community." Their first few comments were a lot of random quotes about communism that look like they were to farm enough upvotes to make this post.
not to get all "they targeted gamers!" but it's so lame that the spammers are trying to disrupt us with concern trolling, when pointing out instances of concern trolling in news and social media was a frequent topic of discussion on r/cth, not to mention on the official podcast of the sub, citations needed.
Ok, Google.... give me a couple of quotes about communism and left unity.
It wasn't random quotes it was combat liberalism. and I was trying to combat liberalism.
You're concern trolling to try and sow distrust among the community. Your concerns themselves in the original post are valid, but they've been addressed time and time again. If you were a good-faith actor you wouldn't keep pretending the mods are nefariously trying to pocket the librepay money. And don't think I've forgotten about that comment about how mods "astroturf threads."
Yeah pretty much. Again, if the lack of transparency bothers you, I think it's entirely reasonable to hold off on donating. Personally I'm not donating very much, so it's not a big concern for me.
I'm not sure if I like the framing of a lack of transparency as just a personal issue.
The lack of transparency is a transient state not a permanent one. Again if you don't want to donate, you do not have to.
I mean what guarantee is there that it isn't? Couldn't some sort of finacial plan or something have been put forward from the jump?
Not really; it's frankly incredibly impressive that this site is up and running so soon, honestly.
servers cost a couple hundred bucks a month to rent. they're getting a couple hundred bucks a month. I'm comfortable waiting a few weeks for a more detailed plan over virtually no money at all.
Maybe one could have been, I don't know the logistics behind the server, but at the same time I haven't donated for exactly the reason you are articulating. I trust the mods but not enough to donate without some sort of plan or budget. Other people have felt compelled to donate absent a plan and that is their own personal thing to think through.
Well I just don't think it's unreasonable to have to wait for things to settle down to get a full accounting for the money--I know firsthand how challenging a project like this can be.
what? are you telling me to go somewhere else because I asked for transparency?
Yes, you aren't really contributing. People have answered your questions and your motives seem to be to sow doubt rather than to be informed.
Well, I think they've got plenty to handle hosting for a little while at this point, so you can probably just hold off on donating until the report comes out.
I mean the site's what, a week or so old? There's a lot going on at the moment, so I don't think they're dragging their feet so much as they're just swamped right now.
Yeah I know the site's new but like i figure they would atleast have like a budget or something they could share for like how much servers cost, or like what proportion they might be giving to the devs that are working so hard on this.
I think you're just concern trolling to be honest. How can I know your intentions are genuine? I want to know before I commit to giving you upvotes you know.
Even if I was I don't think it's smart to put your money into a black box with no accountability. I'm not crazy for thinking that right?
You're not, it's a perfectly valid point, but so are the facts that; the site's run by volunteers, has been up for lest than a week, is dealing with a huge wave of spam, and that you aren't forced to donate
I mean I know I don't have to donate, but that doesn't mean that there shouldn't be some transparency put in place
I agree, everyone replying has agreed, even mods have replied saying there planning on it, there just obviously higher priorities right now, what do you want? for them to set some arbitrary date for it? and if they miss it declare this place a scam not matter if it's serving it's purpose or not?
at this point it's seems you are a wrecker or just willfully obstinate
But everyone agrees you're a wrecker, hmmmmmmmmm.
So uhhhhh y'all gonna ban this wrecker? They've completely burned any plausible deniability by accusing the mods of astroturfing threads, among other things. At best, they have an axe to grind with the mod team and are acting in bad faith to sow distrust, and at worst they're directly connected with the Kerrys
Ehh it's starting to get old. Maybe let them corncob just a bit more
EDIT: Maybe leave the post and comments up though? It could be used as a reference for users if future situations like this arise
glad we just decide to ban people we disagree with, and make up conspiracies about them.
Give it up. It's plainly clear to anyone reading this thread what you're doing.
maybe don't ask people to get banned for raising legit concerns
I'm just here with popcorn, mate. everyone is just in this thread to mess with you. you lost all pretense of good faith ages back and you've been wasting your time for about an hour now.
🤣
That's the thing 'comrade', I do agree with you
You brought up a valid issue, mods have responded saying they tackle it, we should give them more than a few hours to deal with the pressing issues, rather than posting unproductive disruptive comments; the activity of a wrecker
Your first few comments were just posting random quotes about communism to farm enough upvotes to post, and now you're sowing distrust in the community. You walk like a duck and quack like a duck.
You're right. It wouldn't be smart to trust a random user stating they have a genuine concern without them showing me their discord communities and be transparent. I'm not crazy for thinking that right?
when it's done. takes longer the more people spam names of neoliberal grifters.
I feel like there should have atleast been something rudimentary available from the start.
Donations will go towards active hosting costs and also building up a runway so we can afford to add better infra/stability. If the support is there, we also really want to create a worker-owned tech cooperative so some members of the team can do this full time.
From an announcment on Discord. More transparency is coming.
If you engage seriously with the idea that the mods are nefariously pocketing profit from this site, you're doing what the wreckers want.
I'm don't think it's far out not to want money going into a black box that we don't know where it's going.
The mods and admins have a whole lot on their plates right now. Just don't donate until they implement the transparency changes.
Our talented devs are currently working hard to harden our spam removal capabilities to make this platform more safe and hospitable for everyone. Consider donating to our liberapay so our team can continue to provide chapo.chat steadily with upgrades and new features.
I won't donate anything until I know the money is going where it's supposed to and I recommend everyone do the same.
I fully agree, and I'd imagine most do. I trust that the admin team will implement better transparency sooner rather than later. And based on OP's posting history, I'm leaning towards them being a wrecker.
They probably are. Don't take my post as wrekcer shit, please, I'm just trying to support transparency and honesty. It's not that I don't trust the mods, it's purely out of principle.
