People who harass our trans members in DMs?

People who insist, in bad faith, that there isn't any transphobia because they don't personally see it?

People who get foaming-at-the-mouth angry at new efforts to root out transphobia?

We're better off without them.

This site gets with worse with every trans user who leaves because of transphobia, and I hope that we can make this a site where that no longer happens.

It gets deleted pretty quickly fortunately. If you want to see it, take a scroll through the modlog.

Honestly the pushback is in a way a subtle form of transphobia in itself. Every time this crops up there’s a bunch of people willing to die on the hill that’s it’s either not a problem at all or that mods doing anything about it is somehow a bigger problem than the actual transphobia despite the fact that trans users have been expressing their discomfort and leaving for ages. It’s just gaslighting at a certain point whether they realize it or not. They need to stfu and listen.

          Nail 👏 on 👏 the 👏 head 👏

The issue is that some cis people here really feel that maintaining their convenient browsing experience is more important than protecting trans comrades (in the context of the pushback over the removal of downvotes). It's like people say they support trans comrades, right up until it inconveniences them the smallest bit.

Yup it’s exactly that last sentence

“Uhhh this is a shitpost site I just wanna shitpost”

Cool, but if your posting is upsetting people you should have solidarity with that’s an instant “stop your bullshit and reflect on your choices.”

This is an opportunity to grow and understand and be stronger in our standing together no matter what our identities are.

Yup and yup. Ironically, I was initially salty over the removal of downvotes, until I pondered it and realized I was being reactionary. When people say "it's just a shitposting site" I feel like they often really mean "I should be able to say whatever I want without consequences". Like even if it's just a shitposting site, does that really mean we shouldn't try to make it less toxic to marginalized comrades? Smh

Taking a cue from the adage "ironic shitposting is still shitposting", harmful shitposting is still harmful. We can still shitpost without bigotry.

You are absolutely spot on comrade. I hope that we can push out reactionaries so that trans comrades who have left feel comfortable returning to the site.

Personally I’m cool with more bans.

Rose tinted glasses are to be expected when looking in the past. But for one thing we had like 10x the users and posts so that probably helped obscure shit.

I know that some of the users who are being shit heads I recognize from the old subs. They were obnoxious contrarian asshats there and they are here too, and if it were up to me they’d have been gone a loooong time ago. Makes me laugh when people whine about the mods being heavy handed when they’ve left a lot of people choosing to die on this hill unscathed.

I also don’t experience too much but I do see it, and I’ve seen it in the mod logs. But above all else I’m gonna listen to the droves of trans users over a bunch of whiney white dudes about the issue that effects them worse. Particularly knowing, as a cishet white guy, the unfortunate history we have as a group of talking over and disregarding the experiences of our marginalized and nonmen comrades. The little bit of talking about it I’ve done has had them come at me a bit I can only imagine if you were openly posting as trans what you’d have to deal with day in and out

Yea I think there’s a lot of solutions to issues that basically come down to when the devs can sort it out.

Ultimately we have develop a clear idea of the site culture we’re working towards is and have it reaffirmed by each of us when we encounter bs. I don’t think mods and banning can do everything. People need to join in with our visions

Agreed, I hope so too. :fidel-salute:

Likewise, you weren’t one of the people I was calling a shit head. I always assumed you were doing what you felt was right even if I didn’t agree with every person you were defending was worth it. Godspeed comrade.

The pushback occours because users never look at the modlog, and when they do it's always during a purge so controversial bans are the first ones they see.

Also a small point, I think people carried a Twitter struggle session over to here, which concluded that you shouldn't demand bio pronouns. That's true on Twitter because Twitter has a lot of real names and faces on it.

That doesn't apply here, to an anonymous forum. You should have to use them here, because you absolutely should not be sharing your actual identity here.

On Twitter, you end up asking a segment of non-anonymous people to either misgender or out themselves.

So yeah it's cis people here putting not much thought at all into their posts.

Yeah, it's frustrating that there apparently isn't much normal users can actively do about it, other than report it if they see it before the mods do (which isn't often, because they're so on top of it)

Wish we had some way to self-organize poster's militias.

That's a good point. I'll tell people to fuck off on occasion, but 9 times out of 10 I'll just report and move on. Probably not the best habit. I'll get more confrontational from now on.

The mods delete transphobic shit constantly. I think a lot of the problem is that most users have no idea just how much stuff gets deleted. Look at the modlog from time to time. If you see mods leaving lame answers for banning, it's probably because there is so much nonsense.

I almost wonder if the solution is to moderate less and let the users bully the transphobes more so we increase solidarity. That's what made the subreddit so great. We were united in solidarity against the transphobes. On the other hand, that would mean more visible transphobia on the site.

        Edit: nevermind dumb idea

Yeah. Open internet forums will never stop being abusive places. I honestly think we should have trans people "mod the mods" instead of having to directly dig through the fucking poison from raiders as well as subtler shit from non-raiders.

What I mean is a cis mod, someone who isn't personally hounded all day by this vitriol and gaslighting, and isn't personally worn down to nearly the same degree by it, should be sifting through reports. And then a trans/enby mod should evaluate their judgement of posts occasionally so that they can handle the subtle shit as well as the blatant shit.

Like, there is literally no chance that the modlog will ever be remotely healthy for TransComrade69 to spend so much time having to stare at. Fuck that
