This music is great! It must be because of these capital intensive goods which I use to play the music not the human and social society which produced it.

These headphones have great highs but the warmer tones leave something to be desired. The midrange has a nice apricot tone with a whiff of nutmeg and white birch.

I mean "have great highs" has a definite meaning... "warmer tones" less so but it "warmth" usually refers to a particular part of the midrange and some headphones definitely have a warmer response.

My sober brain understands that there can't be that big a difference between ~$100 headphones and ~$300 headphones, but my drunk mind nearly bought a pair of $300 headphones the other day. Thank fuck I was able to reason out that it would be dumb as fuck to put that on a credit card.

for consumers nah, in the studio sometimes it's nice having nicer headphones but tbh you shouldn't be mixing in headphones anyway. 300 is kind of entry level decent stuff in pro audio.

If my union wins the lawsuit it currently has out against my employer, I plan on using some of the like $10k each of us will get in back pay on a pair of really really nice headphones and maybe a portable amp.

The rest will go directly to student loans.

The thing is price sometimes isn't even the clearest factor in good. Beats by Dre are $200+ but are shit but Bose in-ears are $100ish and are great.

Audiotechnica MX40 or Grado SR80e are the best headphones under $100, depending on whether you want open or closed back.

Beats are a fashion statement, Bose punch under weight because they are wireless.

          But yeah, agreed otherwise.

There is a massive difference between $100 and $300 headphones. There is diminishing returns past that though. This is assuming you are talking wired headphones without noise reduction or anything like that. If you go for extra features, you either pay more or the money comes out of the audio quality.

Hard disagree. People are prone to having all kinds of niche interests, and these will continue to exist even in a communist future. I believe such a future would allow you to pursue them even more freely. What is problematic here, just like in any other hobby under capitalism, is the tiered quality, separated by price point and the inevitable smugness that comes by being one of the few that have the high quality expensive stuff. But again, people will find something to be smug about even after we achieve communism.

i fell down that hole, the cure is to realize if you're gaming, it's not really that vital. If you're a writer, maybe just get a Realforce with Topre Switches, or if you're a programmer, just get an HHKB, or find that weird need youre tryin to fufill, like i made a split ortho keyboard, and i really dont NEED another keyboard because this is actually pretty comfortable.

Buy Zealios, then wonder why you droped $60-70 on just switches alone and what you got out of it.

This is the best take. There's probably a $10 difference in manufacturing cost for $30 headphones vs a $300 pair. Without the profit motive everyone could have awesome headphones that are built to last and easily repairable.

Audiophiles hate when you explain the sampling theorem to them. They can not take that they can objectively not hear any benefit to more than 44.1Khz samples.

However a nice speaker which is not to expensive is very nice 😎

The eye does not see in frames and can definitely distinguish a more high rate than 24fps. 24fps is only the point at which the frames will start to blend in to each other to look like motion. It is the bare minimum not the maximum.

The rate is also different for other animal, so your cat will not see video but a fast slideshow until around 100fps.

isn’t the same thing going on with people who insist on high framerate, when human eyes see about 24fps?

No, that's complete nonsense. Humans can easily see the differences up to around 60, and beyond that point, there are significant differences in the way it feels if you're playing a video game even if you can't easily see the difference yourself.

        human eyes see about 24fps?

IIRC the upper limit to the human ability to notice a single wildly distinct frame (like a completely black frame or a frame from a different video) is around 500Hz. They won't necessarily be able to determine what the content was, but they will have picked up the change. 60Hz is where things look consistently smooth and you start to miss slight variations in length between frames, and by 120Hz even variations in frame timing smooth out.

          • KobaCumTribute [she/her]
            ·

I'm not sure it is 500Hz, just that it's somewhere in that range (trying to look it up I'm finding a lot more on comprehension than just literally noticing that something changed at all), and that comes from having read about studies that did shit like insert a single wrong frame in a video and attempt to determine the threshold at which people no longer notice that there was an incongruous frame. Perhaps to put it another way, around 2 milliseconds is ostensibly the shortest time something can be visible for someone to notice that there was something there, since as someone else pointed out we don't actually see in "frames" there's just a limit to how quickly information can by absorbed and processed.

Reading further, just below 5ms of having an image visible is the minimum time at which trained professionals start identifying outlines correctly, and ostensibly around 13ms is where the average person starts being able to see and recall content

Human eyes don't see 24fps. There is actually a noticeable difference between 24fps and 60fps video. Above that it gets blurry. Many people felt weird watching the Hobbit trilogy at cinemas weird because it is filmed at 48fps and they weren't used to it.

            A comparison: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zquClG3j9so

Even if you do blind tests, it's usually rather easy to figure out the right one.

Well the slow mo ones shouldn't matter lol, to me the normal speed ones did look different, but not, like, a huge difference. However I found blind tests and I could always tell which was which. The difference between 24 and 60 fps is even more noticeable. It becomes the most noticeable when you are actually playing instead of just watching, because the slightly more jagged motion makes you feel like something is off compared to real life even if you aren't necessarily noticing that it is slightly jagged.

Something to bear in mind is that some screens have a low refresh rate, like 30Hz or so and in these screens you shouldn't be able to tell the difference easily.

It's not the same thing at all. People can demonstrably notice a difference up to in theory 800hz if trained.

But anything past 44.1khz mathematically and biologically cannot make a difference.

There's good audiophile investments like what you listed, quality headphones or a good set of bookshelf speakers, or hunting down a quality FLAC rip of the 2012 vinyl only remaster of the 1997 Iggy Pop remix of the original 1973 David Bowie mix of Raw Power, and then there's the stuff the reddit fanboys go after like getting super premium deoxodized copper cables or whatever. Cheap copper wire from home depot or a wire coat hanger yet these nerds refuse to believe it's the case because of their sunken cost fallacy.

I spent most of my teenage and young adult years listening to a Clip+ MP3 player loaded with punk music recorded in a basement somewhere, good headphones was all I needed to get the full effect of how bad the recording is and I won't have it any other way.
