You can’t downvote me even if you wanted to! MY MASTER PLAN IS FINALLY COMPLETE!

Now I will have the most downvoted post in the history of this site FOREVER!

    I just downbeared your post.

    FAQ

    What does this mean?

The amount of bears(points) on your post and Chapo.chat account has decreased by one.

    Why did you do this?

There are several reasons I may deem a post to be unworthy of positive or neutral bears. These include, but are not limited to:

    Rudeness towards other Chapos,

    Spreading incorrect information,

Sarcasm not correctly flagged with a /s.

Am I banned from the Chapo.chat?

No - not yet. But you should refrain from making comments like this in the future. Otherwise I will be forced to issue an additional downbears, which may put your posting and commenting privileges in jeopardy.

I don't believe my post deserved a downbear. Can you un-downbear it?

Sure, mistakes happen. But only in exceedingly rare circumstances will I undo a downbear. If you would like to issue an appeal, shoot me a private message explaining what I got wrong. I tend to respond to Chapo PMs within several minutes. Do note, however, that over 99.9% of downbear appeals are rejected, and yours is likely no exception.

How can I prevent this from happening in the future?

Accept the downbear and move on. But learn from this mistake: your behavior will not be tolerated on Chapo.chat. I will continue to issue downbears until you improve your conduct. Remember: Chapo is privilege, not a right.

Since it's so important to vocalize our critiques instead of just downvoting, let me say that I found your constant posting about downvotes very aggravating and it's more aggravating that you were successful in getting the admins to try this very bad idea

This is a better plan than the old plan of banning people by reading the tea leaves of their downvotes.

When you put it that way it seems like we were using witchcraft to ban terfs which I am fine with actually

Yet I can still click ANGERY PURPLE ARROW - it just erases the smug comment I was going to write. Dr. Chapo has thought of everything.

Positives: Now I won't go into self doubt avalanches (avalanche is not the word I wanted) because I recieved one (1) downvote. Negatives: Now I can't vent my frustration to a bad post with a simple downvote, and will instead feel the need to reply every time, which will increase the likelyhood of my temper issues getting out of control and saying something petty and stupid that I shouldn't and eventually getting banned.

    Mixed bag imo.

Self doubt avalanches from a single downvote are great. It has all the weight of my hyperfocused brain's creativity to berate myself for various imagined ways I've messed up or bothered people with all the shame and embarassment of said feelings resulting from a single downvote

      I feel you comrade

I also hadn't considered that a lot of people end contentious conversations with a downvote, thanks for pointing that out. I personally really struggle with disengaging (can you tell? lol) and can see that pulling me into aggressive and pointless encounters if I'm not careful

Damn you sure did! Guess It didn't really click until I heard it the second time. Though I do still stand by the take that we should try to not bring that mindset here

You're not wrong, but part of that is avoiding unnecessary conflict, and insisting that people should always comment if they want to express disagreement is most certainly not the way for me to do that (and I doubt I'm the only one)

Thank you too, your posts are usually great and ones like this make me feel incredibly seen and valid, and I can't express how important that is to my mental health :heart-sickle:

This sucks. People with bad takes will get more visibility if they post more.

But we don't report stuff with downvotes though, I don't see the problem.

Also, I'm 99% sure this is a trial period of a week to see how we all feel about downvotes being gone so don't get too worried

The entire structure of Lemmy assumes the ability to downvote, and that’s why comments are ordered the way they are rather than just chronologically

It is? could you elaborate? I don't see it

I don't appreciate the condescension comrade. There are still upvotes, therefore comments can still be ordered by vote ratio. Pretty sure you know that's what I meant.

                      So where's the problem

Edit: to elaborate further, this change artificially eliminates negativity. Hiding something doesn’t make it go away, and we shouldn’t force people to pretend to like things they don’t. That’s like being forced to smile as a cashier.

just saw your edit, figured I'd respond sorry if I'm being annoying, it's an interesting discussion

I'd argue this is the strength of removing the downvote, because downvotes can mean anything, but a comment condemning a post for whatever it is to be condemned for is far sharper and more pointed a weapon

It's not combatting liberalism to downvote a liberal post, but to analyze it and shred it apart in front of the audience

I can understand where you're coming from, but I guess I just don't agree that it's a substantial problem

Anyway, thanks for explaining your pov, sorry for getting defensive <3

Ya. Assad is pretty bad. Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party are fascist. The issue is that a lot of people are very impressionable. So when you make Assad shitposts it normalizes him.

All you need to do is send them a clown emoji instead, its just as gratifying, only slightly more petty, and a lot more irritating for the recipient to get sent 20 messages which are all just a single clown emoji than it is for them to get 20 downbears
