Tankie is such a fun word, every time someone uses it you have to put on your detective hat and carefully read their post to deduce which of the ten meanings of the word they meant.

The Hong Kong protests originally started because of an extradition bill that would have allowed China to extradite this guy who murdered his girlfriend back to Taiwan. Hong Kong can only extradite to countries it has treaties with, of which Taiwan was not one, so the bill allows a federal Chinese authority to make extraditions when necessary. This was seen as a federal overstep to the protesters, a la “states rights” here in America.

It was both. IIRC the murderer killed his pregnant girlfriend in Taiwan and fled to Hong Kong. But HK can't just have an extradition Treaty with Taiwan, because its not an independent country but a rival government of China. So it necessitated a Treaty with the PRC as well.

It was 100% just a pretext for riots that were planned well in advance (they were basically a continuation of the 2014 Umbrella Movement). They knew protesting extradition laws to the sinister mainland were an easy cause to spin in the West, which was vital. Conveniently left out were the part about the murderer and that extradition for political crimes was explicitly barred.

Funny part is - all of this is just on Wikipedia in fairly clear language, and you can rationalize arguments for both sides of the debate about this law with even the most cursory analysis. Seeing the blatant CHINA BAD propaganda and the cynical exploitation of these actions for Western imperialist ends changed me from relatively neutral on the matter to pretty Chinapilled.

What happened to the guy? Did Hong Kong put him on trial?

Whether China should have more control over Hong Kong or less doesn't depend on a single extradition case. That was just the case that happened to trigger the legal dispute.

He went to prison for 18 months in Hong Kong, not for murdering his girlfriend , but for stealing money from her credit card after he killed her. After his release he volunteered to face trial in Taiwan, but Hong Kong wouldn't allow him to leave. He's living in a police safe house, evidently.

Literally no socialist likes Putin. Do they think that just because he's Russian he's a communist?

I love Putin. Presiding over the continued financialization and privatization of Russia at the expense of the working class appeals to me as a communist.

i've never gotten mad at someone calling me a tankie even when i wasn't convinced of my own red blood cause of decades of american red scare. I know it bothers some people because of some implications but fuck it, call me a tankie idgaf anymore honestly lol

It still kinda of amazes me everything about Putin pre 2015 or so has been memory holed. Like the whole fact that he had a really close working relationship with Obama or his general role in liberalization projects and stabilizing markets for the US.

that astroturfing campaign to make putin look super cool was one of the weirdest fucking things i've ever seen on the internet. A lot of people fell for it, came out of no where, blew up on every corner of the internet and it worked extremely well till russiagate happened. Genuinely a interesting moment of internet history that is almost all forgotten today.

I don't even think it was astroturfing, just people saw photos of Shirtless Putin on a horse or throwing people around a Dojo and thought he was cool,

oh yeah I don't think it was all astroturfing but I do believe in the start it was at least some-what. It was popular on 4chan and reddit which are both super ripe for astroturfing but once the hiveminds all agree that they like it, their job is done. I could be completely wrong, but it just seemed that way looking back at it because of just how stupid it was and how popular it really was. i can't say for sure though

I still remember him, in the early 2000s, giving a speech in the German parliament and getting standing ovations in the end.

The conflict in Ukraine really riled up NATO, and then the libs talked about Russiagate on TV for 4 years straight. Honestly the EU/USA are mostly just angry Russia is asserting itself as a major power again after they went through so much trouble to smash the Soviets in the Cold War.

All true, and I'd like to mention that Russia started buying weapons from China more and also developing their own / buying less from the US. All related no doubt

The libs on the MR subreddit are insufferable. They worship Seder's tepid SocDem ideology and wannabe John Stewart era Daily Show format. Really miss Michael, he gave the show some ideological coherence but now it just feels rudderless. Especially with Emma and Nomiki, it's just an echo chamber. Sam's concept of change is taking over the Dem Party over a few decades. That's not going to cut it.

Seder turned into a scolding lib anytime anyone refused to vote for Biden, just as bad as anyone on CNN or MSNBC.

Yep. The loss of Michael Brooks exposed the soullessness of Sam's show. He is a decent debater, but it makes him think he's this genius and everyone who disagrees is literally dumb.

“Look, tankie either refers to people who were pro-Soviet/Stalinist in the most strict sense of the term or people who are "pro-non western countries like Russia and China" in the more current, less strict sense of the term.

Using one interpretation, Tankies support right wing oligarchs who assassinate political opponents, invade their neighbors in wars of aggression, (in China's case) are currently engaged in genocide, and put gay people in prison.

Using the other interpretation, Tankies support a totalitarian regime that killed millions of it's own people, invaded their neighbors in wars of aggression, helped the Nazis conquer Poland, put political opponents into gulags, and also put gay people in prison.

If you dont like these classifications, then don't be a tankie(either one).

It is possible to dislike capitalism, American foreign policy, and colonialism while also not being a fan of the Soviet Union or Vladimir Putin. I do it every day.“

Holy shit how can libs be this dumb

Seder seems to be of the same mind as Steven Pinker that basically things will continue to get "better" in some sense. He said something about how millenials will live longer than boomers/GenX, I've never seen the rest of the crew disagree with him faster. But also it explains why he is so okay with gradual change, he doesn't believe there is a hard time limit on when the left could accrue power. It makes me think he greatly underestimates what the consequences of global climate change will be, because as far as I'm concerned if socialists don't get significant support within the next few decades, climate refugees and resource scarcity will be the wedge issues that fascists will use to take power.
