Last Jedi wasn’t a great movie by any metric but it was far more hated than it should have been. The rise of sky walker was a fucking garbage pile of a movie yet audiences liked it? Wtf
That's what fucks me up. That these fanbases can mobilize to harass women and people of color so much that they go on review sites. And then the filmmakers listen.
So in this instance, instead of having an episode 9 that works with the (admittedly bad) setup from the last movie, they make episode 8.5 that actively undoes the cool story elements in 8. That they catered to the racists makes it even worse.

I think Last jedi wasn't a good star wars movie, as it felt tonally out of place from the other movies. However, it was working with what was put forward in the force awakens., and is a competent movie. Rise of Skywalker was just absolute trash on every level except visual affects.
For me it was that both films were dumb as shit, but at least there was some good lightsaber shit in TROS. The only part of TLJ I remember at all is when the ship explodes in half.
You are using critics wrong. You find one which you agree with generally, and then trust them/learn their blindspots, not using some god-forsaken performance metrics
He was also predictable. You knew where you disagreed with him and sometimes he'd give a movie a 1 for x reason which would make it a 5 for me.
Letterboxd is actually somehow useful in this way. Even though they basically made it as a social media platform for reviews, you can find even more critics you agree with and just follow them. I genuinely don't know that many big name critics either, but it was really fairly easy to find people on Letterboxd that share my same idea of a good movie
The nice thing about finding a critic you generally agree with is you'll get recommendations that are up your alley. I've found The Guest, The Clovehitch Killer, The Blackcoat's Daughter and The Kid Detective solely because of Red Letter Media.
I guess rewording, I mean that I try to go in blind to movies unless I hear something specific.

Audience ratings are skewed because they only represent the people that actually care enough to rate that movie. This creates a major disparity in certain ranges for a few reasons but the main one is in low critic ratings vs high audience ratings. When a movie gets very low critic ratings everyone that actually has any good judgement doesn't watch the movie at all because it's not worth wasting their time on, this leaves the only people to rate it as the people with shit judgement.
People who choose to go watch a movie usually self-select for liking the movie. Nobody goes to watch a movie they think they will hate. You see this in anime ratings a lot too, people wonder why everything they watch they rate 7-10 and think that's because people are bad at rating things but it's not. It's because people pre-select the content they watch and nobody wants to watch something that they think they'll rate below a 7.
A movie or show has to do an exceptionally bad (or good) job of mis-marketing itself to lead the wrong audience into watching it that ends up rating it below a 7. If an audience is properly informed about a movie or show before watching it then they will never be an audience of people that will dislike it.
If on the otherhand every member of an audience threw a dart at a dartboard to select anything they watch, you would then end up with a much more even distribution of scores for the things they watch.

Yeah in the cases of the shit that got voted down purely based on some anti-sjw controversy. The rest is like, just the fact that nobody went to see Aladdin if they thought they wouldn't like it, the only people that went already decided they'd like it beforehand.

Rise of Skywalker was never going to be good considering it was meant to wrap up a trilogy that they were doing on the fly, with different directors and no communication between films. Also, JJ Abrams did my boy Rian dirty.

The ones where audiences rated higher than critics, it's mostly from franchises where anyone watching it knows what to expect. If you're watching Batman v Superman on purpose, you probably dont care that the writing is bad, you want to see batman punch superman in the face, and then you rate it highly

They had to have filmed it with a completely different story in mind, then recut it at the last minute.

Suicide Squad was good in a turn your brain off kinda way. Helps if you actually like comic book movies in general.
Passengers was alright. And there's an unofficial "rearranged" version that makes it a different movie. It starts with the woman waking up to find Crisp Rat alone. In that context Rat seems more like a creep.
Passengers was a netflix and chill not even really watching the movie kinda thing for many people if I am not mistaken.
Last Jedi, Captain Marvel, and the Ghostbusters remake all got review bombed by people who probably didn't see any of them because girls are icky and bad or something.

you should def watch Snowpiercer. it's pretty entertaining, a bit heavy handed with the symbolism though but i really liked it.
rewatched Contagion last night and the movie did a fuckin pretty good job on the realism. It kinda nailed how stupid people are and I appreciated most of the scientific accuracy, not 100% but pretty decent for a movie.
ah yeah i'd for sure watch Snowpiercer over any of those. Contagion is a decent movie but I doubt i'll ever rewatch it, at least not for a long time. I hardly paid attention the first time.
Drag Me To Hell is superb, slightly campy old school horror and one of the most consistently misunderstood and anti-capitalist movies made in the last 25 years.

Alladin 2019 is one of the most cynical movies I've ever seen. Like it's more cynical than Disney just trying to soak up more money from IP, it's Disney literally saying "oh, Aladdin's not very woke because it was made in the early 90s. Let's make it woke so that the IP can still be cashed in". For as trash as The Lion King remake looked, at least the reason it was made was Jon Favreau wanted to fuck around with some new technologies that were being developed.
But then you have folks who go out of their way to review bomb a movie because their beloved capeshit or feminism bad. I know it's an aggregate measure, which makes it hilarious when DC stans think it's a conspiracy why their movies do worse.
The fact that tros has a higher audience approval rating than last jedi legitimately makes me angry. The Last Jedi had issues, but Episode 9 was the worst movie I've ever seen in theaters.
