It's better as a meme stock sub and that will be what draws people over from the WSB hype if anything.

Making a separate finance sub for non-memes would be a lot better, because people usually want to be able to separate those for serious advice.

Yeah, even before this people were asking for a "line go up" comm and this is basically that. I think seeing how this pans out and repurposing it if no one uses it or creating a more serious comm if it takes off is a good idea.

It's not like containment groups ever backfired and had the exact opposite effect of what was intended, bringing in the worst people imaginable, who then overtook the entire site, or anything.

ahh yess slowly this site will turn into wallstreetbets for sure

you are right that we should delete the containment comm and tell them to post to main like they were before, thatll prevent them from overtaking the site

401k's are the new social security but they hardly justify daytrading culture on this site. Coulda called it finance and kept all the stonks and personal finance learners in one place

I got one from Papa John's when I delivered from them. Cashed out at the beginning of the pandemic (right before the market tanked) and walked away with like $100 more than I put in after $500 in fees (total payout was like $700).

              401ks are a scam.

lol, I'm too poor to contribute anything.

I recently got a letter talking about how I could have earned 10k this year if I opted in, and a big asterisk, which resolved to, as long as I make 3x what I currently do, and invest more than I currently have each month for my entire discretionary income budget.

But even if I did, a 401k isn't the same as day trading.

Figuring out how to survive, manage funds, and not become parasites while understanding that many people really are broke as shit, sounds good.

But I don't know if I want a comm of financially comfortable lefties who genuinely don't understand that many people either don't have 401ks, or don't have enough money to buy into it.

I don't know if I want to get into a poverty Olympics sort of discussion, at all, because hurting less is still hurting, I know, and especially with a site admin, because if/when I get banned, I want it to be for something funny. But 3% for me, both wouldn't get me very much, even when matched, and would hurt, because my "discretionary" income does a lot of heavy lifting, in addition to little luxuries, as the "any food beyond beans and rice" income, the "stocking up the freezer when stuff is on sale" income, and the "saving a little extra for the next personal financial emergency that will inevitably happen, but I don't know when or how" income.

A lot of the time, normie financial advice has resulted in them recommending I do things I'm simply unable to do. Right now, I'm still low on the rungs of the socioeconomic ladder, but I'm finally able to do things like buy in bulk, pay for a warehouse membership, buy better stuff that lasts longer, etc, that I used to not be able to.
However, there was a time where I just didn't have the $40 a year for the opportunity to spend $20 for $30 worth of product, or even purchase the chest freezer needed to store it. And people just couldn't grasp it.

                  Eh, perhaps.

I guess it all depends on if there's enough failsafes to prevent capitalists who think it's okay to behave exactly like capitalists as long as they label themselves as "accelerationists" from swarming in.

If people can get in, get out, and pay off their debt, fix their cars, help their situations, and the comm turns into tips on managing money, and assistance programs that people may be unaware of that's good.

If it's a constant wave of "_____ is the next GME!" posts, that's bad.

Though, if it's intended to be a temporary containment board, after which time, it changes to general personal finance one, as long as it cracks down hard on daytrader parasite fetishism, then it could be fine, yeah.

I think I agree with you in principle given that the only examples I know about are reddit containment subs that were complete failures. That said I do wonder how much the the ineffectiveness came down to reddit's complete unwillingness to actually curtail the bad behavior rather than to just make a show of doing something about it for plausible deniability.

All previous containment communities I can think of have all backfired.

But they were permanent containment attempts, whereas after reading site administrator comments, this looks to be a temporary containment attempt, which will morph into a finance board when the hullabaloo is over.

So I'm a bit more comfortable less uncomfortable, with its existence.

And I guess my opinion of what it eventually turns into really depends on how much the mods and site admins allow vs crack down on, day trading discussions.

Subs/communities work for categorization but are not really effective demarcation for containment since there is no real barrier for the users.

What will matter is the ratio of new users to the capacity of the site to induct those users to the established norms. The latter I think is comprised of the number of established users, the "confrontationalness" of those users, number of mods and the willingness of the mods to enforce rules. I think reddit containment failed because the chuds are more numerous and militant than the subreddit mods and the site admins are unconcerned with the quality of the site provided growth metrics are good.

This is good, don't let the overly protective and isolationist users attack you into taking it down or renaming it because the name is literally the only reason those users might want to come here.

Converting people over under a strongly left admin team is far better than building walls to keep only the most left leftists in.

Complementing your complete misrepresentation of what I said, you're welcome.

There is value in growing this place by adding users who can easily be converted and are teetering on becoming leftists by this eye-opening event to the point of upvoting AOC tweets, and Marx quotes, and clearly calling this a class war. Isolationism gets us nowhere as a site or a movement.

we don’t have the tools or resources to moderate it out effectively right now

If we don't have the tools or resources to grow this site then what is the goal here. And how do we accrue those resources without growing the userbase?

"Leave and convert people elsewhere, like on Reddit, but give them no alternative to Reddit" is not a feasible strategy because they slip back into the culture of WSB, which is what you're complaining about.

The "we outnumber them thing" doesn't apply anymore if the site's admin team is leftist and committed to that, which they clearly are. There is no war to be won over that like there would be on a subreddit, because we own the site.

The goal is the develop the tools so that we CAN manage a large influx of shit

For a perfect opportunity that comes along every what, once a year? This is the opportunity and the admins are clearly signaling that they are willing to make the attempt to progress, so who are you even arguing in defense of?

You can go into the communities page, join all the comms you like, then go into setting and set your feed from all to subscribed.

Might not be exactly what you want, because you'd have to keep up on what new comms arise, as their posts won't automatically show up in your feed, but yeah.

Apologies if you already knew this.

The other annoying thing is that there is no "subscribe all" button. Also I think mine is broken because it says I am not subscribed to some stuff I know I am subscribed to.
