Putin: "we uhh must invade Ukraine because uhh blood and soil"

Online leftists: "omg so anti-imperialist, a $1.5T economy with 1M active duty soldiers and the largest nuclear stockpile in the world has no agency whatsoever, everything they do is orchestrated by the US but also I support them for some reason!"

Hexbears: “omg so fascist, this doesn’t comport at all with my western leftist aesthetics, how am I supposed to feel good about awarding my meaningless critical support if it’s not either AES or a weak country that’s already been hopelessly immiserated by its enemies?”

I am seeing that too, a growing number of people just want a good both sides take and leave it at that. I can understand but it is also not realy going to achieve anything novel because both sides being bad is already quite obvious.

Nobody is questioning that Putin is a capitalist pig, but the real conundrum of what to actually do when the US leaves you no choice is just heading straight up against the massive wall that is western leftists idealism, oh and there is a lot of idealism out there it turns out.

God am I glad to be skeptical of claims of AES being relevant to China. It makes it so much easier to not fall for false-choices that ask us to make fools of ourselves critically supporting people who would butcher us all given a chance.

Yes. He was literally propped up by American capitalists. r/GenZedong is really hyping the Russian side of the war right now lol. One of the front page posts is a propaganda video of Russian soldiers giving Ukrainian POWs cigarettes and acting like that’s how Russia is officially conducting war

Some people are happier being contrarían than leftist.

If it was the United Socialist States of America they'd be right wing.

I think it is perfectly fair to point out, if it ends up being the case at the end, that if Russia can conduct war without the same level of humanitarian suffering as the US or all of the shit going on in Syria/Yemen that this level of human suffering is a political(more ideological even) choice and not a necessity or inevitability.

If the liberal democracies cared at all about their humanitarian concerns there are a dozen conflicts going on right now for them to try and do something about it.

However Russia will be put in the spotlight, so they are going to put on a show whenever they can. Genuine or not, political or not this is all a result of decades of humanitarian rethoric followed by absolutely zero action against US and allies war crimes.

Everything becomes a spectacle for all sides.

Battalion fleeing. I’m not saying I have evidence they haven’t, but I’m sceptical of claims like that right now.

I expect there will be a component of ‘denazification’. The factions that pushed the Maidan coup have also prevented implementation of the diplomatic solution via Minsk 2. They’re likely what Putin means when he says ‘nazis’.

With them out of the picture, diplomacy comes back online.

Putin represents the interests of his local bourgeoisie, which are reliant of the local exploitation of natural resources and industrial production. EU and the US represent the interests of the international bougeoisie which relies on financialization, free markets, and free flowing capital. This war is a good example of how the capitalist powers do indeed compete with each other, they compete with the each other for the right to exploit.

Tbh he’s a super nice guy, I’ve literally never heard him talk about politics at all before, ever. Since I don’t watch cable news, I assume what he’s saying is likely coming almost verbatim from that seeing as how this Russia-Ukraine stuff is being drummed up rn

Putin aims to restore something, but it‘s not the Soviet Union, which is ironic considering the slew of admiration for the Russian empire and the tsars in recent media productions (The Romanoffs comes to mind).
