Also, if you are going to retire you have to have some skin in the stock market.

Retiring on just SS is not a happy place. True leftists would want to help other leftists no matter the system they find themselves in.

Talking about it and actively engaging it aren't the same.

Already in there, some people are acting exactly like parasites, talking about the next gme to jump on, and how they have no sympathy for those who might be left holding the bag, or even who didn't/don't jump in because they don't want to risk their emergency funds.

Not everyone, but it's there, and like a cancer, it'll spread if it isn't excised.

You're not excited by the chance to participate communally in the biggest kick to the hedge-capitalists in recent history? While watching the contradictions intensify to an unheard of degreee? wtf.

I would happily buy 50 dollars of GME, if I had a fucking brokerage account, and hold it forever if it contributed to this kind of acceleration.

The class conciousness I've seen on reddit in the last few days is unprecedented imo.

lol, if we're talking about either /r/wsb or reddit as a whole, I've seen more takes about "secret government interference" and demands to "free the free market", than realizations that the system of capitalism itself is inherently rotten and irreformable.

I've been seeing massively upvoted posts/memes about class war, class conciousness.....about tearing the system down, not reforming it to make capitalism better. Plz don't ask me to find them.

The Masters Of The Universe types were venerated on WSB up until very recently. If you can't see massive opportunities here I don't know what to tell you.

I'm not seeing lib posters looking for modest reforms either, or looking for the system to go back to the former normal. The curtain has been pulled back for them.

You should, though, because who the fuck knows what's happening regarding further stimulus and many people are looking at looming debt and eviction on the horizon, so they're putting in the savings they have now in the hopes they'll pull out enough to weather the coming storm.

I mean, they shouldn't, and a socialist website shouldn't be engaging in it, but I totally understand why some people are playing with fire.

One of my lib friends has been radicalized by this stupid stock shit and me gently nudging him along which is awesome but the fact that fucking admins on this site are STILL encouraging people to waste their money on this performative garbage is telling.

Making a fucking stocks gambling comm when users (including myself) have been requesting a personal finance comm for months is a slap in the face.

It's deeply disappointing that "we can radicalize them!" has been used as an excuse to encourage poor people to throw away what little money they have to pointlessly demonstrate something that's already been clearly demonstrated. And even more concerning is the encouragement of doing it for the chance of getting more money (which is extremely unlikely at this point).

I guess I should've seen it coming tbh, beatnik has admitted to being a PMC ghoul. Extremely cringe.

      • maverick [they/them]
        ·

Not a personal affront to me, more like the community as a whole. A lot of people here would probably be helped by a comm dedicated to being smart with your money. Few people will be helped by a stock market gambling comm, and a lot will be directly harmed. If they actually convert it to a personal finance comm like they say they will then that's good but allowing the "stocks gambling is praxis, actually" bullshit to propagate in the meantime is a bad move imo.

If you look at the modlog you'll see upward of a dozen threads posted to main removed and redirected about this today give it's the biggest news story of the week because of our incredibly dumb economy, media, and callous disregard to an ongoing pandemics.

The new comm is pretty obviously a way to contain all of those in one place. So trying to treat that unique situation as a judgement on your other comm proposals or anything else doesn't make that much sense.

It's not exclusively a containment comm though. If it was a containment comm it should've been called something like wallstreetnews or stonks or something like that and make it clear that it's not for advice on investing/gambling. Specifically calling it wallstreetbets sends the message that it's meant to serve the same purpose as /r/wallstreetbets, and if you browse the comm it's clear that people are interpreting it that way.

Or you could call it /c/wallstreetbets because the event was caused by /r/wallstreetbets, and discussions about the new developments in the saga as well as discussions about how to get involved in the gambling would would be posted in /r/wallstreetbets on reddit.

It is designed to replicate the function of /r/wallstreetbets, and keep those posts off of main. That's the definition of a containment community.

For real, this has infected every single part of the internet, and beyond. I saw it on all discord servers I'm on, and all the subreddits I checked. Of course it was going to come to Chapo too - and the new comm at least keeps it centralized and allows uninterested users to filter it out. If only for modding reasons, the new comm was a necessary thing.

Just make a separate finance comm, people want a place to post memes about this shit, why mix those?

All of these people criticizing when this is the most fun the site has been in months, it's like chapos need to hate someone in order to persist.

Making the wsb comm is good to contain the posts and CLEARLY shows people want to post about it, given how active it is. Don't give in to some fucking wreckers complaining that it should be nuked and turned into a serious finance board when it would be easier and better to just make a separate serious finance comm.

Since then I have always been interested in the market, in the same way that I am also interested in watching hurricanes during the hurricane season.

I mean its the biggest fuck you to wall st. by the average person in awhile if not ever in the US. Even if it does get wiped clean in the end by some form of a bailout.

Sorry but Im not exactly overwhelmed by fellow leftist accomplishments this last year (including my worthless self). When everyone else seems to be doing fine. We spend so much damn time just talking or letting shit distract us from the bigger picture that we end up doing little to nothing while the dipshit hick groups with much more numbers, influence, etc go out and spread their fascism. Then Im forced to watch fascists hit the capitol in minecraft when thats the shit we should be doing instead of letting libs jack all our megaphones to lead up to kettling situations during the summer protests and the come back the next day and let them do it again rinse and repeat, or a bunch of libertarian teenagers on reddit doing more harm to the image of capitalism than our generation ever has.

Ive got off track and ranty so TLDR let people have their little victories even if they are vicariously. Especiailly during these times where hope of anything is hard to muster.

I think it is better if it is quarantined in a separate comm than if it is all over the place, at least you can filter it out that way if you want to.
