In the interest of being nonsectarian next week we should have only downvotes

I honesty hate how discussion boards have all evolved to have upvotes and downvotes over the years, it squelches any thought outside the local hivemind. But, if you're going to just get rid of one of them, the downvotes are much worse than the upvotes. So I welcome this change.

The positive to downvotes/voting/scores is that you can see what takes are absolutely unacceptable in a community. Like it's good as a lurker to see nazi shit get downvoted to hell.

Yeah I miss old traditional forums. Obviously plenty are still up but everyone is lazy and either just opens a subreddit or a reddit clone.

Personally think there should be no voting whatsoever. Even with posts anything that offends the hivemind is gonna get squelched down, whether they had something valid to say or not. Just let first come first serve be the rule, like in the old days.

And I do the same thing, checking to see how many upvotes I got lol.

the upvote/downvote feature is a way to train their algorithms and w.e other bullshit they are running to tailor content for you. It's ML for do you like cat pictures or anti-semitic memes, or anti-semitic memes with cats in them?

If you want to stop people from debatebroing, then why take away the main way to voice your dissent without starting a debate?

My thoughts exactly. The site is going to become 10 times more toxic due to this decision. If something pissed you off, you were able to downote it and move on. Now every post will become a fucking struggle session because commenting is the only way to voice dissent.

Unpopular take incoming but I feel like 90% of problems on this site could be solved if people just logged off from time to time. Of course you're going to run into something that offends you if you're always online.

After all the calls to simply disable downvoting these past few weeks? No.

I mean, those calls weren't unanimous. There were a lot of people who disagreed, and they're not really getting a chance to have their voice heard here.

That’s kind of the problem, decisions keep being made on “calls” to do something. Some certain clique or thread “calls” to make some change and everyone else bucks.

I could see this being an issue because people were complaining about overzealous banning, and now we have no way to police ourselves and will basically have to increase bans

I would be happy if you announced that you will no longer be banning for anything except harassment, threats, spam, and we could have free for all dunking sessions like the good old days

You could even put in a feature where -10 or something gets you temp muted or hidden or slower posts. Let us police ourselves and bully the baddies

          no way to police ourselves

Because all the people who have been leaving are a very clear indication that we've been doing a great job policing ourselves, haha.

Well like I said you could but a temp mute on people with low scores.

A lot of the people leaving are from the weird ban waves and bigotry accusations and just don’t want to have their votes audited

I don't think it's such a big change that it requires a vote. It can always be changed back.

Starting off every comment at +10 might make everyone happy, though.

Yeah, stuff like that is why I'm pretty cool with whatever you do on this. It's a lot easier to throw suggestions out there than it is to implement improvements.

People are humans, and humans have psychological quirks like treating comments that are at -3 worse than comments that are at +7, even if they rationally understand that those comments and the vote responses to them are the same. Entire industries are built on playing little mind games like this to squeeze money out of consumers, and it works.

what was the problem that needed solved? like was there any demand for this at all. why is the goal to turn this place into a hugbox

    • Good_Username [they/them,e/em/eir]

The term "hugbox" instantly raises my hackles and makes me wonder if you might actually be a reactionary asshole. I don't know that you're a reactionary asshole, obviously, and you may not be, but maybe don't call things hugboxes? That would be my suggestion.

      • Gang_gang [none/use name]

why is it bad to say hugbox? does it have some meaning i dont know`? i thought it just mean an echo chamber, maybe slightly more derogatory

            ·

oh, ok. id never heard that before, next time ill just stick with echo chamber or something. not my intention to reference autism and wasnt aware of a link. but i dont agree though that not wanting artificial kindness to be enforced is somehow reactionary.

and i dont know what the fuck youre talking about with regard to trans people. i mean like they can be downvoted as well i guess ? but thats a pretty shitty argument lmao. trans people post cringe sometimes too, theyre not immune

I always assume that every decision the admin team makes is the result of a 5 minute chat that involves no real logic just "what's something most users didn't ask for?". If I didn't want downvotes I'd be on the discord. Or twitter.

Edit: admins, if you're reading this apologize to astonedape because you only banned them for being annoying. they won't read it and probably won't come back but you were extremely shitty to them. it's the least you can do if you're gonna disable what got them banned on the first place

        irrelevant part of the comment

Well, talking shit about mods is sort of my thing. If you don't like it, downvote me :sicko-yes:

Forgive me for thinking that a buried comment is not a good apology. If their main account is still banned and the only place you acknowledge your fuck up is on a post with over 200 comments, how am I supposed to believe you seriously care about it.

I've said this in another comment but they are not the first trans person you ban without thinking, accuse of bigotry and then ignore for weeks after they've told you that friendships/relationships they have were ruined by the (wrong) accusations and that they feel hurt by the way they were treated. I believe this also drives trans people away from the site.

I understand having a life outside of this site but if this is the second time this has happened... I believe it will happen again. And I don't like what I see.

It's obviously too late now, I bet that people don't care about it anymore but it's still incredibly shitty you can hurt them and decide to post irrelevant decisions and not a real apology.
