On this day in 1978, thousands of New Jersey postal workers walked off the job after their work contract expired to protest mandatory overtime, forced speedup, lack of support from union leadership, and unsafe working conditions. The strike eventually grew to including nearly 5,000 postal workers nationwide, becoming the largest strike of U.S. federal employees between 1970 and 1981.
The previous contract, which set the terms of employment for U.S. postal workers, had just expired at midnight on July 20th. Postal management, the national union leadership, and the Carter Administration, had created a new collective agreement which ignored most rank and file postal workers' concerns.
In Jersey City, New Jersey, workers at the Bulk and Foreign Mail Center formed the Good Contract Committee (GCC) to organize a set of demands for the new contract that reflected the interests of the working class. These activists launched a newspaper called P.O.W. (Post Office Worker) and distributed 75,000 leaflets at local postal facilities.
The Bulk Jersey City wildcat strike lasted for four days in an attempt to nullify the tentative national contract agreement. It shut down the NJ plant as well as another bulk center in Richmond, California.
After the strike was broken, 125 workers were fired, 130 were temporarily suspended, 2,500 received letters of warning, and leaders of the walkout were blacklisted. The union did not ratify the proposed work contract, and an arbitrated contract settlement was imposed.

some years ago my mom's doctor told her that her blood pressure was too low and her ankles were weak, so she should consider eating more salt and wearing high heels. Hoping that if I go to a doctor they'll tell me to take more psychedelics and wear bigger hats
My bus driver is playing jazz. This is the Jazz Bus and I am all for it.
This sounds like an old timey euphemism for smoking pot lol
Like some banging Bebop? Or freeform chaos? Cause those are way different vibes
I don't know jazz except that swing dancing is fun. I don't know if I'd wanna dance to this but it's got a good beat going.
There's a segment on the local news where some talking heads watch and react to viral videos and tik toks for the entire half hour segment. Very strange.
:headpat: I wish there were a knife-free version, cause I just use that emote for the face and people think I'm tryna stab them

NPR is so loathsome.
Underwritten by “wealth management” firms and progressive-sounding companies, content delivered by the Neoliberal PMC who eat kale and have Pride flags and BLM stickers on the car, and speak in quasi relaxing tones but with a whiff of adolescent sophomoric insider and upbeat entertainment delivery.
It’s all pure entertainment, with little digestible nuggets of news like on AM radio that are designed to steel an establishment narrative but say nothing by always avoiding the fundamental crux of a news item.
In the end it’s purely entertainment for the liberal who needs to feel superior, a light, empty feel-good segment in between and plenty of bourgeois recommendations for what to do for your summer off. It’s not intended for listeners to ever get into real action over anything but more performative nonsense so they can go back home, guilt-free to their Neoliberal lives of consumption, treats and convenience.
Holy fucking shit, my dog and I just almost died because of our own stupidity but I saved our lives
My dog was barking so I decided to step outside (huge mistake) with him to see what he's barking at like a fucking idiot
So I'm looking around for a dog or something when I see 3 bears and I'm like "Oh shit, get back inside!" So of course he jumps off the porch and runs straight at the biggest bear like a fucking idiot
The bear immediately bites him on the back (miraculously he's ok, the bear mostly bit his long hair and only nicked the skin) and I'm screaming, my pup retreats but the bear pursued
Now I'm raising my arms over my head and yelling as loud as I can at the bear which worked and got the bear to retreat but my dog is still a fucking idiot so he tried to keep going after the bear until I stopped him
Thankfully we're both ok and he seemed unfazed even before I gave him the bit of first aid he needed and a bunch of treats he deserved
He may be the luckiest, bravest and stupidest dog alive and I love him
> camp establishes volunteer labor unit to have minors cover menial labor disguised as “transition to staff”
> relatively sizeable unit for its purpose, averages 20 campers per session since you come for free and get food and board as compensation.
> new camp director tries to monetize the unit.
> spend three grand to do work FOR the camp
> there’s a session with only 3 people
> camp now internally breaking down as they relied on labor of minors to run internals smoothly and then tried to sell the ability to do labor for the camp for four weeks to families.:rip-bozo: :porky-scared: :thonk:

Set my pronouns when they first added them as he/him/they/them because I was like, I would be fine being called them. Good gender neutral third person pronoun which definitely won't awaken anything within me
I'm I going to be the one cis guy on this site? The comrade thing is only because it's common to call someone that where I live in politics, plus it's cool.
Full support to all my enby comrades though!
Idk, boys are fine, enbies a fine, girls are fine as hell, people will figure it out 🤷🏻♀️
Idk why I'm choosing this to be a grammar nerd about, but comrade is an honorific, not a pronoun, that one always stuck out to me
Idk, boys are fine, enbies a fine, girls are fine as hell, people will figure it out 🤷🏻♀️
Is true is true
I'm also a cis dude who chose the comrade option because it's cool and would enjoy being called it, so that makes two of us anyway
I'm staying in a city for a few days, which is the perfect period of time. Just short enough to value the noise as "a vibe" and not "horrifically overstimulating".
