The collapse and dissolution of the Ottoman Empire was a long and bitter affair, comprising revolutions, a disastrous world war and infighting.
The dissolution of the Ottoman Empire (1908–1922) began with the Young Turk Revolution which restored the constitution of 1876 and brought in multi-party politics with a two-stage electoral system for the Ottoman parliament. At the same time, a nascent movement called Ottomanism was promoted in an attempt to maintain the unity of the Empire, emphasising a collective Ottoman nationalism regardless of religion or ethnicity. Within the empire, the new constitution was initially seen positively, as an opportunity to modernize state institutions and resolve inter-communal tensions between different ethnic groups.
Instead, this period became the story of the twilight struggle of the Empire. Despite military reforms, the Ottoman Army met with disastrous defeat in the Italo-Turkish War (1911–1912) and the Balkan Wars (1912–1913), resulting in the Ottomans being driven out of North Africa and nearly out of Europe. Continuous unrest leading up to World War I resulted in the 31 March Incident, the 1912 Ottoman coup d'état and the 1913 Ottoman coup d'état. The Committee of Union and Progress (CUP) government became increasingly radicalised during this period, and conducted ethnic cleansing and genocide against the empire's Armenian, Assyrian, and Greek citizens, events collectively referred to as the Late Ottoman genocides. Ottoman participation in World War I ended with defeat and the partition of the empire's remaining territories under the terms of the Treaty of Sèvres. The treaty, formulated at the conference of London, allocated nominal land to the Ottoman state and allowed it to retain the designation of "Ottoman Caliphate" (similar to the Vatican, a sacerdotal-monarchical state ruled by the Catholic Pope), leaving it severely weakened. One factor behind this arrangement was Britain's desire to thwart the Khilafat Movement.
The occupation of Istanbul, along with the occupation of Smyrna (Izmir), mobilized the Turkish national movement, which ultimately won the Turkish War of Independence. The formal abolition of the Ottoman Sultanate was performed by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on 1 November 1922. The Sultan was declared persona non grata from the lands the Ottoman Dynasty had ruled since 1299.

On the one hand: death to american cultural imperialism. On the other, kids in costumes going around for candy sounds adorable
"I'm a tigaw!"
Yes you are buddy :meow-melt: here's a snickers
Halloween has to be one of the least offensive American exports. It's just one more excuse to have a costume party and hang out with your neighbors, and doesn't have nearly the same kind of consumerism tied to it as Christmas.
that's why they keep injecting the "stuff in candy" moral panics. when i was a kid it was "never take anything homemade it's all poison". one neighbor did thickly coated candy apples. one made like homemade starcrunch puffed rice/caramel/chocolate stuff. luckily our neighboorhood was pretty communal. imagine communist halloween of awesome homemade confections
Sadly didn't get many trick or treaters this year, just the one, a child wearing a witch's hat almost as big as her.

Fascism is a pretty warped mindset. Millions of people who think that Trump is a manly, virile, powerful leader. Or Bolsonaro, who had shit falling out of his nose, is a burly strong manly man.
Idk, it takes some serious brainworms.
I called a Bozo supporter a devil worshiper on Reddit and he went fully mental.
:jesus-cleanse:
Hi folks. I'm eating carrot cake right now with some caramel syrup and granola chunks.
It's very moist
Yeah the dense yet light cake with it'd mild sweetness and spice goes great in contrast to the crunchy and more sweet granola
That sounds amazing. My mood is lifted out of simple happiness that you are enjoying something so wonderful.
every bit of ukraine news is like ‘Russians have lost 400000 men and their entire military arsenal in the past 48 hours’
Wondering how much longer anglos will be interested in this war, we have a famously low attention span and this didn't effect us like 9/11 so it could be "shit's boring, who cares?" soon. Oh and then their will be a terrorist attack by a former Azov neo-nazi using a dirty bomb.
No joke, as an Ameriturd, I lost my interest in the war 2 weeks into the proceedings. Sucks to suck Europe, but you brought the US on yourselves and none of us in the imperial core even care about your winter.
wish my PC was fixed so i could sink 10 hours into a Vicky 3 run and then ignore the game for 6 months
I wonder if we could organize a multiplayer Vicky 3 game
Could be fun but Paradox games take so long that it'd probably have to be multiple sessions
also don't wanna pay for the gameI did but I don't think the multiplayer will work. Maybe if everyone is using pirate copies?
you just need a paradox account in the pirated version i used.
The number of asian youtubers whos entire gimmick is doing some shitty "comedy asian" accent is too damn high
hes trying to do a hong konger canto accent but no one actually sounds like that
Huh? I thought he's doing Malaysian Chinese accent and we do kinda sound like that.
He's mocking the accent isn't he? He does not sound like that in real life.
Like the joke is the accent isn't it? Kind of weird idk
Manglish/Singlish is an English based creole associated with stereotypically lower educated Chinese diaspora in South-East Asia (the reality is that we code switch depending on the social context we're in), in interviews I think Nigel Ng said that he based the character of Uncle Roger on his own relatives and how they acted when it came to food growing up in Malaysia.
Because of the lower class associations, comedians used to use the accent as a way to punch up and make fun of the perceived social hierarchy that exists between the English educated and non-English educated, where the character with the accent usually provides more common-sense and practical solutions to problems the more educated characters fail to grapple with, and the humor is derived from the irony of that. (Oh my god I deserve to be wedgied so hard for sounding like a nerd explaining basic comedy) Look at Uncle Rogers targets - usually Big Damn Important White Chefs like... Jamie Oliver, and the humor comes from him roasting the big multi-millionaire 'expert' in what is essentially a country bumpkin accent (but also it has a racialized, colonialized aspect) for fucking up what should be really simple ethnic dishes that are impossible to get wrong as long as the chef does due diligence in researching the recipes.
Edit: I dunno, maybe him being diaspora does add this layer of fakeness and we're in some simulacra shit, and I don't know how to navigate diaspora vs native identities and the responsibility of who ultimately gets to have a say and be listened to cos fuck me I know diaspora can have total dogshit takes, AND yeah going back to the OP maybe we don't need more Nigel Ng's and Steven He's because 'funny asian accent' as a bit is getting reaaaaaaaaally old... but I dunno, I see what Uncle Roger is doing and can appreciate it for what it is.
My very small child got a king sized snicker's bar for halloween and I went back to the house that gave it out and demanded xanax and a copy of das kapital in german instead. I'm very upset at my boy.
Can you imagine how popular your house would be if you had a big stash of ludes from back in the day and were just handing them out?
I read Salman Rushdie's memoir in 2014 and the only line I remember from it is "Bono's car stereo is not like other people's car stereos."
Dreamt that a woman ~10 years older than me was hitting on me (skipping dream context cuz it never makes sense to others), but I was focused on reading a book by :zizek: so I ignored her for what felt like hours.
:zizek-preference:, lady
oh thank god, i never pay much attention but something felt off and i thought i was going insane.
hate it ngl. how dare they change things :angery:
interview starts with "r u willing to relocate across the country for this remote job?" :hyperflush:
Season 2 of ClimateChangeAnxiety’s Life as a Harem Manga Protagonist is REALLY in full swing.
My roommate and I slept together last night
Is this a :fidel-salute-big: situation or a :no-copyright: situation?
Assuming no drastic unexpected consequences, the first one.
All of my life I have been told that Blair witch project is the scariest horror movie
Watched it last night. Shit sucks
I like it but then again one of my greatest fears is being alone at night in the woods being stalked by something. I'm a simple guy.
It's the OG found footage film and I think a lot of it's impact was that no one had seen anything like it before. There's a lot of movies like that. Like Halloween seems kind of mid and full of overused tropes and stereotypes, but that's because it's the movie that originated most of those tropes and stereotypes.
I think it's a good movie, but saying it's the scariest ever isn't setting you up to enjoy it very much lol
