On this day in 1973, following the fascist coup against Chilean President Salvador Allende, American journalist and documentary filmmaker Charles Horman was executed in the National Stadium concentration camp in Santiago.

Horman was born in New York City on May 15th, 1942, graduating from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1960 and Harvard in 1964. He was an active anti-war protester, present at the 1968 DNC protests and producing an award winning documentary titled "Napalm". He also worked as an investigative journalist for publications such as The Nation and The Christian Science Monitor.

In December 1971, Charles and his wife Joyce left the U.S. for Latin America, eventually settling down in Santiago, Chile, where he worked as a freelance writer.

On September 11th, 1973, fascists led by Augusto Pinochet and the CIA ousted democratically elected Marxist President Salvador Allende. In the following weeks, many prominent left-wing activists, such as Flora Sanhueza, Victor Jara, and Frank Teruggi, were arrested and killed.

Horman himself was arrested on September 16th, seized from his home by Chilean soldiers and taken to the National Stadium, which had been turned into a de facto concentration camp following the coup. There, Horman was executed on September 19th, 1973.

Documents declassified by the Clinton administration in 1999 indicate the U.S. knew of Horman's plight but initially obfuscated investigations into his death. They also indicated that it was unlikely Horman would have been killed without the knowledge and permission of the CIA.

In June 2014, a Chilean court ruled that U.S. authorities had played a "fundamental" role in Horman's murder. In January 2015, two former Chilean intelligence officials were sentenced to jail in Chile for the murders of Charles Horman and Frank Teruggi, another American activist who was also arrested, executed the following day.

Not sure there's enough steel mill jobs in the world left for all the power users, Stelco's new facility employs only like 30 people, and I think that includes engineering and logistics.

there's an observable phenotype of republican politicians from southeastern states that are just like 'my name is Eustace Sugarplantation, I used to be the Comptroller of a city that was named after a racial slur until 2003, I'm one of like one-hundred and seventy-five Republican representatives who always vote party line and cosponsor bills that are named like The CLEANUP Act and say shit like "people with hunting licenses are permitted to summarily execute two homeless persons and an additional homeless child per hunting season", I have been in my seat for 26 years uncontested.'

This little bird that is eating berries outside my window is unbelievably clumsy, I watched it drop 3 berries for every berry it managed to eat. What an absolute disaster of a bird.

He's sharing with the groundlings! My partners dad used to live near the woods and had a few feeders, you could watch all the forest critters share the bounty of the feeders, lol. Bigger birds would come and messily scoop out seeds, chickadees or little birds would pick them out of the grass, squirrels got the seeds the birds thought were too hard to crack. He left melon out for the deer and you could see the whole of nature operating under kropotkin style Mutual Aid A Factor of Evolution rules.

I joined made an account here pretty soon after r/cth fell, but I didn't post, so I joined the Chapo discord instead for a leftist community. I spent too much time on it and ended up leaving at the beginning of some weird struggle sessions that even I, a terminally online poster at that point, did not understood. Joined back here having avoided all the struggle sessions here including the outdoor cat one. All that to say that I've avoided the big blow ups except this one, and I gotta tell ya folks, I'm kinda bummed I missed the outdoor cat one, it sounds like much more fun

Learned that there is a company here that runs a service that automatically scans all court decisions for decisions regarding involuntary psychiatric care or drug addiction, and compiles that for other companies to be able to weed out anyone who has ever had to receive this care. (These court decisions are public for anyone to find technically, but as a private person you would have to be aware of the specific court that passed the judgement to even request access to it, this service allows employers to just search names in a database).

Theres a guy in the news for having applied to over 400 jobs and always hitting a roadblock late on in the process where regardless of positivity from the recruiters, they ended up stonewalling and ghosting him, turns out he was in this registry for having been in involuntary care once. Such a fucking cruel and dehumanizing service to be running, literally just creating a vicious cycle where you can never dig your way out of a hole once you have received the black mark of mental health problems once in your life.

The Authority for Privacy Protection recently ordered this company to cease publicising court decisions in this manner, but the fucking slime scum piece of shit chairman of this company went out whining about how this is "censorship" and actually his service for companies to discriminate against anyone who hasnt lived the perfect normal life is on the same level as journalism, and operates under freedom of the press. Absolute fucking ghoulish monster, disservice to humanity that he gets to walk the streets like a normal person.

Edit: Searched the name of their chairman, fucking former Moderate party politician, the ones who are likely to get a prime minister position in coalition with the fascists now. They may not be socdems but goddamn their name is spot on.

    Also, a freemason 👁️ 👁️ 👁️

Idk jack shit about wrecking or manipulation(this sounds suspicious as fuck but bear with me Im gonna sound way more sus) but I feel like if I tried it I wouldnt make all the accounts follow the same very simple and obvious naming scheme, idk maybe Im just built different but it surely cant be that difficult to like just make other kinds of usernames, or have an internal scheme that isnt externally obvious.

The motherfucker that came onto this site, created a bunch of upvote bots with the usernames all ending in "123", and thought no one would notice has to be the most foolish attempt at wrecking ever.

This person seriously thought admins couldn't see account creation lmao, just check the modlog they created like 20 accounts for this shit lol.

I remember they tried this exact shit two years ago, you would get like 30 upvotes all at once for random comments before they got banned. Did they really think that they could try again and no one would notice?

Oh my god they even spaced out the account creation dates to try throw the admins off the trail. They spent an entire month creating all these accounts lmaooo, now it's all just gone!

It's wild to me how capitalists just have so much money that they can't use that they spend it on all these ridiculous flights of fancy.

They literally can't spend it or give it away fast enough, when I've talked to libs or family members about how billionaires are immoral as a concept I always use Makenzie Bezos. She got tons of money from the divorce and gave away huge sums of it but AFAIK she still has MORE than what she started with despite giving, spending, etc.

There's nothing to invest in because the rate of profit and profitability has declined so much. And they can't do anything about that except for literally destroying capital somewhere like they do with weapons. Financialization already got done between the 70s to 90s. Whence profit now? Just tulip bulb mania after tulip bulb mania, preferably without as little connection to the real world as possible. Metaverse, crypto, whatever.

And they don't even make cool stuff that would be a public tourist spot after the revolution. Like Versailles was the palace of monarchs, the colloseum was a place of execution by the empire and now people just go to see cool architecture. No one will be looking at bezos yachts as interesting in future generations.
